MESMAP 🎟

National Sovereignty and Children's Day 🗓
Today, young children take over the government of Turkey - for a day. In commemoration of the first Grand National Assembly which took place in 1920, families bring their children to lay wreaths at the different monuments of the founder of the Turkish Republic - Mustafa Kemal Ataruk. He had dedicated the new republic to children. The biggest ceremony will be at the Ataturk Mausoleum in Ankara. In the Parliament in Ankara, school children will take seats in the assembly, elect their President, who will give a speech on national television, and symbolically govern for a day. A week before, children ages 8 to 14 of different nationalities were sponsored to live with Turkish families and learn the culture. These kids will later participate in festivals and on the last day, April 23rd, to also join a gala celebration.
