March is still just about in the winter season in Crete, with an average temperature of 13°C, the second lowest of the year. You may not be able to enjoy days out round the pool or at the beach this month, but there are still plenty of other things to enjoy such as visiting the stunning cathedral, cultural museums and the beautiful wineries. Spring is definitely approaching with high temperatures of up to 16°C but evening lows drop to 10°C, meaning a jacket is still necessary. These are similar conditions as those seen in December, and the weather in Heraklion will not truly become spring-like until April.
As the average temperature begins to increase slightly, the average monthly rainfall decreases to 50mm falling over an average of 9 days which is lower than in February when it was 80mm falling over an average of 12 days.
During the month, you will get an average of 6 hours of sunshine which is 2 hours more than the month before, but 2 hours less than April. This is quite a changeable month so it always best to check the weather forecast before planning days out.
With the average sea temperature being a relatively cool 17°C, it's still not the best weather to hit the beach yet as most people will find the sea too cold to swim, but a walk along the sea-front can be pleasant.
