What's the Weather Like in Heraklion in January

Temperature

It is the middle of the winter in January in Heraklion which is located on the north coast of Crete. It has an average temperature of 12°C which is the lowest in the year alongside February. This is relatively cool but you will still be able to enjoy some days out at the beautiful wineries, going on private tours and visiting cultural museums.

During this winter month, you may experience temperature highs of up to 15°C which is the lowest in the year and in the evening, temperatures will dip to a cold 9°C. With the average temperature being relatively cool and chilly evenings, be sure to pack a jacket or coat when visiting Heraklion in January.

Rainfall

With the average temperature at its coldest, the average monthly rainfall is at a relatively high 80mm falling over an average of 14 days. This is the second highest rainfall in the year matching February and November and just behind the 100mm experienced in December.

Sunshine

During the month, you will also have an average of 4 hours of sunshine per day which is the least in the year, but not bad compared to some northern European resorts.  With the high rainfall and the low amount of daylight hours, this is not the most popular time of year to visit Heraklion. If you do visit though, be sure to check the weather forecast before planning days out.

Sea Temperature

With the average sea temperature being a relatively cool 17°C, it isn't the best month to hit the beach, although the sea will get colder by February.  The chance of there being a windy day in January is 45% which is slightly higher than in December when it is 44% but the same as in February when it is also 45%.

The weather in Heraklion is very similar to other locations in Crete, however it does have slightly warmer temperatures and lower rainfall than Chania for example, which has an average temperature of 11°C and an average monthly rainfall of 142mm falling over 15 days during the same month.
