Bars and Restaurants
You simply must try Robot Restaurant - the name is somewhat misleading nobody goes to this Kabukicho wonderland for the food (think convenience store-style bento boxes). If, however, you're more into disco-dancing 'borgs, battling bikini babes and gilded toilets, this is exactly the place for you!
As far as disturbing theme restaurants go, Alcatraz ER has to be close to the top: a prison hospital recreated inside a slightly run-down office building in the middle of Shibuya's love hotel district, Alcatraz delights patrons with everything from drinks served in urine bottles and syringes to creepy nurse waitresses. The grub is mostly standard izakaya fare.
For something slightly more civilized, try Takzawa. The elaborate and inventive cooking is illustrated by a ratatouille of 15 vegetables as a little terrine. In another dish assorted vegetables are harvested from a "soil" of breadcrumbs by the diner. The interior of Aronia de Takazara is petit, with just five tables and enough space for the chefs to freshly prepare all the food.
Things to do in Tokyo in March
The Lantern Festival is held on the 15th and final day of the Chinese Spring Festival and will take place in Yokohama's Chukagai Chinatown at the Ma Zhu Miao, Shrine to the Goddess of the Sea, known as Masobyo in Japanese. There will be a display of paper lanterns on which people's hopes and dreams for the year ahead will be written and performances of lion dances. This takes place on the 2nd March, year after year.
Earth Day Market
If you'd like to support people doing things sustainably, you should head down to Yoyogi Park for its regular Earth Day Market. Some 52 stalls line the 'Keyaki Namiki' stretch between Shibuya and the main part of the park. You can buy organically grown fruit and vegetables, fair trade goods, and handmade crafts. They also have a special recycling setup. Bring leftovers like used tempura oil in exchange for 'R', a special currency used only at the market. You can visit the Earth Day Market website to learn more about it and check when the market is being held.
