    What's the weather like in Tenerife in August?


    August in Tenerife North is the warmest month out of the year. It is also one of the driest as well and summer has officially taken root on the island. Much like the months before, rainfall is hard to come by on the island in this part of the year.

    The month only receives an average of 10mm of rain over a one-day period. The dry conditions also make this time of the year a perfect time to visit thanks to only an eight percent chance of having a completely cloudy day. Visitors can actually enjoy up to 12 hours of sunlight each day.


    Like July, this month can be fairly windy on the island. With a strong sea breeze still blowing in off the sea, the chance of a windy day is 75 percent.

    Sea Temperature

    However, this is still a wonderful time of the year to hit the beach the breeze may even be a welcome break from the heat. The average temperature of the water is at its annual warmest at 26°C (79°F) making the ocean feel more like bath water. Combined with the sunny skies, many people feel as though this is the best time to visit the sand.


    The air temperature is also very warm with average afternoon highs of 29°C (84°F).  Average overnight low temperatures are not much cooler with temperatures bottoming out at 21°C (70° F).  Overall, the average temperature throughout the day is a very pleasant 25°C (77°F).

    In all, this is a wonderful time of year to visit with a lot of weather consistency from day-to-day.     The warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean in August make this month one of the best for beach going visitors. With average water temperatures of 26°C (79°F) and 12 hours of sunlight per day, this time of the year is prime time on the region's various beaches.

    Playa de las Arenas

    One of the most popular beaches on the northern shore is Playa de las Arenas near Buenavista del Norte. This is a beach that visitors have to see during the summer months as it virtually disappears over the winter. A sandy beach, Playa de las Arenas showcases rocky pools to take a dip in without getting hit by waves as well as coastal paths that are perfect for evening strolls. Additionally, the beach is near one of the best restaurants on the northern half of the island: El Burgado.

    Things to Do in Tenerife in August

    Wind and Kitesurfing

    August in Tenerife North is one of the windiest times of the year, but visitors can take advantage of that wind to learn how to windsurf or kite surf. There are several schools located throughout Tenerife that will have visitors riding the waves like a pro in no time.

    El Teide

    This is also the time of the year for some of the hottest weather conditions so it is a good time to visit the highest mountain on the island. El Teide is not only the highest mountain on Tenerife, but is actually the tallest mountain in all of Spain. Tourists can choose to take the easy way up the mountain by cable lift or choose the harder way by climbing to the top. Keep in mind, however, that the second option requires special permission from the National Park Office in Santa Cruz. The view from the top is worth the trip with fantastic views of the entire island.

    Our Lady of Candelaria

    August brings the Festival of Our Lady of Candelaria, which is one of the most significant on the island.  These festivals, found in most major cities on Tenerife, honor the patron saint of the Canary Islands.  Celebrated for over a week, massive crowds gather for festivals, reenactments from the saint's life and feasts.
