White Villa Hotel

The White Villa Hotel  more than lives up to its name, with its cool interiors and beautiful 1940s exterior in the heart of Tel Aviv's White City and its historic villas. Rooms range from a classic double to top of the range loft and many have balconies or terraces. This quiet, cosy hotel is about a ten-minute walk from the seafront and is close to most of the city's main attractions. There is a small fitness room.

Isrotel Tower Suites Hotel

An ideal choice for Tel Aviv in high summer, the Isrotel Tower Hotel occupies the upper towers of a 30-storey seafront building and offers panoramic views across the city and the sparkling Mediterranean, which can be enjoyed from its rooftop pool and sundeck. Spacious air-conditioned suites have fully-equipped kitchenettes and views of either the city or sea. The hotel has a restaurant and lounge bar and is a few steps from the beach.

Tel Aviv Beaches in August

Frishman Beach & Gordon Beach

Take your pick from two more amazing beaches and remember, if you don't like these there are many more right in Tel Aviv to choose from. Frishman Beach is Tel Aviv's widest, with lots of space to stretch out even on the busiest days, shady gazebos, bars and restaurants and great swimming. South of Hilton Beach is Tel Aviv's main stretch of sand, the lovely Gordon Beach, which is popular with locals and has sun loungers, ice-cream stalls, bars, shops and an outdoor gym. There's even folk dancing and the Gordon Pool is nearby.

Casino San Remo

On the border of Jaffa, in the hip Noga quarter, Casino San Remo is a chilled-out cafe, bar and restaurant. Aside from the cool music, dishes range from meaty Bolognese and hamburgers to veggie leek patties and salads. The falafel platter served with mint leaves, tahini and eggplant is a tasty upmarket version of the street-food favourite.

Hotel Montefiore

The French-Vietnamese fusion menu at the hotel Montefiore's restaurant has attracted rave reviews and an upmarket clientele mixing with the tourist crowd. Its brunch is famous with scrambled eggs and smoked salmon, pancakes with maple syrup and other staples. Lunch and dinner choices include raw tuna, sea bass fillet, pork chops and beef fillet with goose liver. The wine list is huge and there's a great bar for pre-dinner drinks.

Kuli Alma 

Head underground to the graffiti-covered Kuli Alma in central Tel Aviv, voted the city's best bar. It's on the corner of Yehuda Halevi and Allenby and has two areas, one for dance music and the other for mainly live performances. There is a large outdoor area to relax and cool off in and there are also regular pop-up shops and exhibitions.

Tamara

Along with its sister branch in Ben Yehuda St, Tamara boasts some of the best frozen yoghurt you will find in Tel Aviv. This one is on the corner of Rothschild Boulevard and Nahalat Binyamin St, right in the heart of the city's buzzing nightlife area and is popular with club-goers for late-night treats. Go all out with the hot chocolate sauce or opt for the more restrained granola with fruit.

Things to do in Tel Aviv in August

Tel Aviv Promenade

Take a walk, run or cycle along the spectacular seafront Tel Aviv Promenade, for lots of fresh Mediterranean air and unbeatable views across the sea, the city and to Jaffa. This is arguably one of the world's finest boardwalks and is certainly one of the most popular, as it's busy morning to night. Stop for a paddle in the sea at one of the many beaches along the way or for a drink and a bite at the countless bars and restaurants.

Chelouche Gallery

Escape the heat for a spot of culture in the cool surroundings of the renowned Chelouche Gallery one of Israel's best contemporary art spaces, located in a neo-classical 1920s house with two identical wings. The range of work is constantly changing and covers video art, sculpture, photography and painting, with works by Israeli and world-famous international artists. There's a lovely café and bookshop on the ground floor.

Gordon Pool

A must-visit any time of the year, but particularly on a boiling August day, the famous Gordon Pool is an Olympic-size swimming pool near the marina on the boardwalk with lovely views out across the Mediterranean. Opened in 1956, it has been extensively refurbished and also has pools for children and toddlers, a snazzy sun deck with beds and chairs and a modern gym and fitness centre, as well as classes and a resident nutritionist.

St Peter's Monastery

The most prominent and also one of the most historic buildings in Jaffa, the beautiful St Peter's Church is hard to miss. The Franciscan church and monastery sits on the site of a 13th century Medieval Crusader citadel and dates back to 1654. After twice being destroyed in the 1800s by conflicts that ravaged the region, it was finally rebuilt in the 1880s and renovated in the early 1900s. An atmospheric and historic place to escape the heat.
