    Skanes Weather for March 2018

What's the Weather like in Skanes in March

    Temperature

March in the Sahel sees the start of a clement season of warm, Spring-like Mediterranean days. Temperatures are beginning to rise, and rainfall averages are starting to fall. The weather can be a little unpredictable, and showers are to be expected at the start of the month; it's still a long way from the dry heat of the summer months, and definitely not beach weather. However, March in Skanes is generally quite pleasant.

Average temperatures of 15C mean that while conditions are still quite mild, it is likely to be a few degrees warmer than in preceding months. Highs of around 19C are expected, and it's not uncommon for temperatures to reach 30C and above; the highest temperature ever recorded at this time is 39C. The weather in March can be quite unpredictable, however, so don't count on long, hot, sunny days. Sea temperatures remain at their lowest at this time, at just 15C, and overnight temperatures drop significantly to between 4C and 10C, so it will feel much cooler.

    Rain

It's a similar story in the north of the country; Tunis sees average temperatures of 14C, with highs of 18C and overnight lows of around 9C. The southern regions of Tunisia unsurprisingly tend to be hotter and drier, the closer they are to the Sahara Desert. From March onwards expect temperatures in these areas to be much warmer. In Tataouine, although daytime temperatures are similar to those in Skanes, with average highs of 20C it is generally slightly warmer; it's also drier, with a rainfall average of only 26mm.

The start of the month sees higher rainfall averages in Skanes, with 40mm of precipitation over 6 days. Showers are usually short-lived, lasting for only a few hours and consisting of a light drizzle. Some fog can be expected in coastal areas, though it shouldn't last past midday, and with increased precipitation, expect a corresponding increase in humidity (75%).

While temperatures are gradually beginning to rise, and it's likely there will be the occasional day where they top 30C, they are still usually fairly mild. Coupled with low sea temperatures and increased rainfall averages at the start of the month, it really isn't beach weather in Skanes quite yet. However, the number of sunshine hours rises to nine by the end of the month, so it is perfect weather for sightseeing and other outdoor activities.

    Bars and Restaurants

Most of the restaurants in Skanes are confined to the hotels. There are a few bars and cafes along the front, which shut in the evenings once the beach-trade is gone. The same is true of evening entertainment; it tends to be in-house. Happily, there are more than enough restaurants and bars in nearby Monastir to provide a little variety.

Marina the Captain on Cap Marina, serves a variety of international dishes and is very popular with tourists. Locals tend to stop in for a beer, rather than to eat. The quality of the food is excellent, the atmosphere is cosy and friendly, and the prices very reasonable. The filet steak comes highly recommended.

Alhambra serves a mix of traditional Tunisian and international dishes, and is very popular with tourists staying at the nearby hotels. Prices are very reasonable, and it's a good choice for an evening meal.

Things to do in Skanes in March

Monastir is right on your doorstep, if you fancy a little more culture and history. The Musee du Mouvement National on Rue Trabelsia is devoted to the history of Tunisia's struggle for independence from the French. It has some wonderful exhibits, if you'd like to learn more about the history of the country.

The Sousse Medina is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sousse was an important commercial and military port during the Aghlabid period (80009) and dates from the first centuries of Islam. Surrounded by the city walls and fortifications, the Medina is of particular historical interest and the open and covered bazaars (or "souks") are wonderful. Wander the streets and take in the sights, try some local delicacies, or do some serious shopping.

If you'd like to see the Sahara, but don't feel up to a long trip in a dune buggy or jeep, you could always book a light aircraft trip. Seeing the Sahara from the air is magical, and the excursion is a lot of fun. Trips can booked from your hotel and leave from the entertainment center in Douz; you may want to combine the excursion with an overnight stay in Tatouine or another resort further south, if you don't want to spend all day going backwards and forwards on a coach.
