Carnival Street Blocos 🎉
Hundreds of registered blocos gather crowds in neighbourhoods including Ipanema, Santa Teresa, Lapa and the Centro. Bands lead street parties with percussion groups, brass sections and themed costumes. Routes close to traffic, and residents and visitors follow the bands through narrow streets and coastal avenues.

Summer Beach Carnival for Tourists – Ipanema 🦹
Tourist-oriented beach carnival events take place in Ipanema and Leblon, with themed parties, beach clubs, music stages and food stands on the sand. Visitors join pool-side and beachfront venues for DJ sets, dancing and beach volleyball tournaments. Activities stretch through day and night in warm early-January conditions.

Rio Carnival – Sambadrome 🦹
Samba schools present large-scale parades featuring themed floats, coordinated dancers, percussion sections and elaborate costumes. Visitors watch from grandstands and open boxes as each school performs its routine across the Sambadrome runway. Handicrafts & Gastronomy Fair – Lagoa 🎎

Leme–Copacabana Open Water Swim 🏊
Swimmers compete in coastal races between Leme and Copacabana as part of Rio’s long-distance swimming calendar. Participants follow marked buoy routes supervised by lifeguards and rescue boats. Spectators watch from the sand as swimmers finish near the Copacabana beachfront.
