Avg Historical Daily Average

If the cold December European weather is getting you down, you can always take a quick break and head to Djerba where the temperature is far more appealing.

During December, the weather in Tunisia is a lot cooler than it is in the peak summer months of July and August. But it is definitely not as severe as the weather in most European countries at this time of the year.

Temperatures are usually a very mild 14°C on average. However, on some days, the thermometer can reach up to a very attractive 17°C. Indeed, historically temperatures have reached up to 39°C at this time of the year. With this record temperature achieved back in 1993.

However it is quite common for a cool wind to blow, especially after dark, so an extra layer may be required for those late night walks.

After a very wet November, or at least comparatively for Djerba, December is much drier.  Expected rainfall throughout the month is only 40mm. And as only seven days are likely to be wet, there are plenty of days that enjoy full sunny weather.

Across the entire month of December, an average of 10 hours of sunshine are expected on a daily basis. This means rain showers are likely to be short-lived with the rest of the day enjoying a typical Mediterranean winter.

Average sea temperatures of 18°C may not entice you in for a swim, but there are plenty of water sports that are hugely popular at this time of the year. From kayaking and surfing to more tranquil sailing opportunities and even fishing. And with average low temperatures not usually falling below 10°C in December, it may not be the time to hit the beach. But if you want to enjoy a very mild winter with plenty of opportunity for some sun, Djerba has it all.

Where to Stay

The apartments at Les Jardins de Toumana are the ideal place to stay for families who want to avoid the cold winters of the UK. These spacious apartments offer plenty of room for everyone, with modern amenities and the beach and local shops just a short walk away. There are plenty of room options, from all-inclusive through to room only. And stays can be as short as one night, or Les Jardins de Toumana can take care of you all winter long. The staff are very warm and welcoming and are especially attentive over Christmas and New Year. It's the perfect way to make sure your winter warmer is everything you could wish for.

If you want all the comforts of home but the warmth of Djerba in December, then book a room at Dar Zina. Everything is done by very congenial hosts to make sure you feel at home in this authentic guest house. Wake up to the smell of delicious home cooking and know that breakfast will always be a treat. And when it comes to dinner, you probably won't want to eat anywhere else. The rooms are traditional but still very spacious and clean. And with only four rooms available, the atmosphere is extremely cosy. For hints on what to do, or even for a lift from the airport, the staff are always willing to help. Enjoy a touch of traditional hospitality as only the Djerbians know how.

Even in the middle of December El Mouradi Djerba Menzel offers a full schedule of entertainment, lively music and excellent service from within their complex. Rooms are spacious, the levels of cleanliness are supreme. And it doesn't matter what the weather outside is doing, there is always some way to spend your time. The complex is set in its own 33 hectares, which means you do need a car if you want to travel around. But with their own private beach, a restaurant and bar, it's just as easy to stay where you are. When you do decide you want to get out, Djerba Explore and the local golf club are a short drive away. Or the hotel offer trips into the desert for their guests. It's a world away from the UK and all that cold weather.

Things to Do

As soon as you step foot inside Fort Ghazi Mustapha, you can't help but imagine what it must have been like to live there. This fifteenth century Fort in Houmt Souk is now in ruins but the museum and local guides are on hand to answer any questions you may have. Next to the fort is the obelisk which was erected to remember the victims of the Turkish Pirate who built a tower of skulls to celebrate his kills. But be aware that most of the information on site is only in Arabic or French, so some prior research is required if you think language may be a barrier. Even if you go just to enjoy the sights and feel the aura from this incredible edifice, a trip to the fort is definitely worth a go.

On a more modern note, Djerba also celebrates the World Isles Music Festival in December. This harmonious celebration has been held every year since 2004 and attracts many tourists to the area to enjoy the different music, culture and traditions that are celebrated. Usually held towards the end of the month, the festival will include music from all over the world. And while many of the activities will demand an entry price, there are many more that you are welcome to enjoy for free.

Restaurants and Nightlife

On Christmas Night, New Year's Eve or any other day in December, the Palm Beach Nightclub is the place to go to dance. Though the temperature may not be so warm outside, the heat certainly rises in Palm Beach, where live DJ's, good cocktails and friendly staff make every night party night. Guests of the hotel and visitors alike are all made to feel welcome here. Arrive before midnight to enjoy discounted entry and low cost drinks. Or look out for special theme nights that can also offer incredible value for money.

On the warmer days in December there's nothing more special than taking a seat at BluWhite Beach Eat & Drink and enjoying a drink or a meal. This restaurant is located directly on the sand, which means everyone's dream of a waterside meal can be fulfilled. Whether you are looking for the ultimate romantic destination or a memorable family affair, the BluWhite will always oblige. If the wind picks up the gazebos will provide shelter. While you sit back in the cosy sofas, admiring the blue and white décor and having the time of your life.

Set in the heart of Zone Touristique, the Sangria Bar is a great place to go and meet new friends. People from all over the world will converge to enjoy the atmosphere at this friendly bar. The drinks are nice and cool, the cocktails well blended. And the sangria is some of the best in Djerba. Live music and excellent service, makes the Sangria Bar popular with everyone.
