The temperature is slightly hotter in Djerba in May when compared with March or April and you should expect the average temperature to be around 21°C at this time of the year.

The lowest temperature you should expect is usually around 17°C. But the heat soars to 25°C regularly throughout the month, so please be prepared for some very strong sun.

If you are not used to the humidity, you do have to prepare yourself during this month in Djerba. Tunisia can be very humid either side of the peak summer months and this island off the coast is no different.

Even in May there are still some really good deals to be had when booking a room at Hotel Djerba Erriadh. It may not be the cheapest place to stay in Djerba, but when compared with high quality accommodation across the world, you will not want to quibble on the price. This charismatic house used to be a Foundouk and is based in the centre of Houmt-Souk. Wander down to the bustling market and enjoy the local culture. Or sit in the 17th century courtyard of the hotel and enjoy the interesting architecture. For the best views, opt for a roof top room at Djerba-Erriadh and enjoy the sunrise and sunset every day of your stay.

Things to Do

As the weather gets hotter and the sea temperature warms, there's not a better time to take a boat cruise around Djerba. This traditional replica galleon will pick you up at Houmt Souk for a day you will never forget. Try your hand at fishing from the ship, before you land at Flamingo Island for a true taste of paradise. You can snorkel, dive, dolphin watch or simply soak up the warm May sun on the long expanse of uninterrupted white sand. Music and food will be supplied for you, before you travel home again with memories of a day that you won't want to forget.

Golf is a very popular sport across the island, especially as the weather warms up. And there's no better place to start than at the Djerba Golf Club. There are three different courses to choose from, depending on your capabilities. But all are still very green, considering the dry climate in May and the following months.  All the water used on the course is recycled from the hotel, so the more guests there are in situ, the more lush the course becomes. When you have had your fill of golf, head back to the club house for a fantastic 19th hole experience. The food is delicious, the drinks are nice and cool and the staff are so friendly, you won't be able to wait for your next round.

Hit the Beach

Like many of the beaches on Djerba, the Hotel Palace Royal Garden beach is located within a hotel, but you don't have to be a guest to use it.  The long stretch of golden sand is perfect for sunbathers of all ages. And with the blue flag for cleanliness flying high, the water is as warm as it is inviting. There are plenty of activities available directly from the beach. And with the facilities of the hotel on site, this is a beach you can come to in the morning, and stay until the sunsets and beyond.

The Hotel Yadis also offers a sensational blue flag beach, perfect for a May get away. Though this beach is likely to be swarmed with visitors in peak season, this early in the year there is usually some well-appointed space. The long, beautiful sand is warm and inviting, and there are a range of gazebos and sunbeds on offer. But you will still have to get there early to secure the best spot. The beach is cleaned daily to ensure that picture postcard effect. Some say it is the most beautiful beach in Djerba. All you have to do is spend one day there and you can decide for yourself.

Restaurants and Nightlife

Go to the Chichkhan Café for a more laid back form of nightlife in Djerba. Choose from the range of alcoholic drinks or fruit teas. Or treat yourself to one of the many flavours of fruity pipes traditional to this part of Africa. The décor is very relaxed with comfy sofas offering the perfect place to chill out and unwind. If you get a little peckish, a full menu of snacks is sure to keep you satisfied. And in the warm May nights, it is a wonderful place to be.

The Bar Ithaque is situated within the Radisson Blu Djerba but offers a fabulous place to sit and relax to guests and non-guests alike. The view over the sea from the outdoor terrace offers the perfect accompaniment to a cup of their delicious coffee or one of the varied range of drinks that are on offer. A very extensive menu provides something for every kind of palate, from traditional Tunisian cuisine to some international favourites. And as you will be served by the high quality staff trained at the hotel, it is the ideal place to spend a memorable evening in Djerba.

For anyone with a sweet tooth, a visit to Cafés Ben Yedder is an absolute must. Some say that the cakes made at Ben Yedder are the best in Djerba, but they could even be the tastiest in the whole of Tunisia. Stop by for a bite and enjoy the delicious ranges of coffees and fruit teas that will be served alongside it. The staff are very friendly and the atmosphere is very relaxed. Dip in every morning and there's a different 'Pie of the Day' to savour. Just make sure you have your wits about you when the coffee comes because Ben Yedder like their blend strong.
