After going through four very wet months, this month only receives an average of 97mm of precipitation. This is greatly reduced from the 221mm just two months before. The rain falls over an average of just 7 days of the month. As a result, much of the month is dry, but it is still advisable to consult an extended forecast before leaving home to make sure you have the proper clothing.

Sunshine Hours

Even though the winter season is just around the corner, there is still an average of 8 hours of sunshine per day. This is because Port Louis is located close to the Equator and squarely within the tropics so there is little change in the amount of sunshine from one day or month to another.

Temperature

Temperatures are still comfortable during this time of the year with the average daily temperature of 23°C (73°F). The average daily high continues to cool as the winter season will start next month and will climb to 26°C (79°F). This is still plenty warm enough to bring shorts and short sleeves for the afternoon hours. However, a light jacket is needed first thing in the morning when overnight lows will fall to an average of 19°C (66°F).

Things To Do In Port Louis In May

Citadel Fort Adelaide

One stop that shouldn't be missed is the Citadel Fort Adelaide. From the top, visitors can see the whole island and get plenty of breathtaking pictures to remember their trip by. The fort itself is small and only takes a few minutes to walk through, but it will also give visitors a good look into some of the history of Port Louis.

Le Pouce

May begins to usher in the drier part of the year with only 97mm of rain expected over the month. And if you are a hiker, which is good news as one of the best hikes is just outside the city. Le Pouce is the third tallest mountain on the island and offers breathtaking views of all of Mauritius from the top. Visitors can opt to hike to the top themselves or with a guide. The trip is moderate in difficulty and will take about an hour to complete.
