The former fishing village of Pefkos lies on the east coast of Rhodes, the largest of the Greek islands. A popular holiday resort all year round, it is famed for its beautiful beaches, unspoiled scenery and traditional Greek charm. Just like the rest of Rhodes, Pefkos has a typically Mediterranean climate with hot and sunny summers and mild winters.

December marks the arrival of winter on the island and the weather changes accordingly. The average temperature this month is 13°C though highs can still reach 16°C during the day. Temperatures are at their coldest on a night, with lows of 10°C and some sea breezes which makes it feel cooler, so it is advisable to pack some warmer layers to wear as you walk around on an evening.

Sea Temperature

The sea is also starting to cool down as winter arrives, with an average sea temperature of 19°C. Swimming may not be very comfortable at this time of year as the water is a bit too cold and winter winds are also quite strong, with an average wind speed of around 18 kph or 11 mph. However, you can still enjoy the water when the sun is high up and the wind is not too gusty. Scuba diving and snorkelling can be done too as long as you put on a wet suit.

Pefkos is well-known for its sunny weather and has 300 sunshine days a year. While sunshine hours are at their lowest in December, there's still 6 hours of sun to enjoy. Plus, although your days will be shorter, Pefkos has a great night scene with lively restaurants and bars where you can have fun after dark.

\One of the biggest disadvantages of visiting Pefkos in December is that rainfall increases dramatically into winter. If you are planning to visit during this time of the year, make sure you pack appropriate clothing that can keep you warm and dry as it can get pretty wet during this month.
