Corpus Christi 🛐

The celebration of Corpus Cristi (Body of Christ) in Malaga is one of the grandest in the Andalucian region. There will be a mid-morning Mass celebrated at the Santa Iglesia Catedral Basílica de la Encarnación. There are several processions in the city centre, but mainly along Calle Larios and Calle Granada, a gigantic sculpted Blessed Sacrament, riding on a float, is paraded with hundreds of devotees in tow. Accompanied by the city clergy, the procession moves along with some characters wearing huge masks depicting characters in the Old Testament Bible. Traditional dances are performed by these characters. Along the route, you can see many decorated altars decorated with flowers and religious icons.

Romeria de El Rocio 🛐

Malaga is one of the 20 starting points for the Romeria de El Rocio, a famous pilgrimage 50 days after Easter. Held in province of Huelva (305 km from Malaga), thousands meet at the Paloma Blanca Shrine in the village of El Rocio. Pilgrims come in flamenco attire on horseback, by carriage or on foot. On the Saturday, they present their simple (ox-drawn float) to the Virgin as the bells toll. Sunday sees “jumping the fence”, when people jump over the fence around the shrine to bring out the statue of the Virgin and parade it around the village. Then, people come together at night for “casetas” with live entertainment and gastronomy into the early hours.

Night of Saint John (Saint John's Eve) 👥

Celebrated with bonfires and grilling sardines on the beach, the Night of San Juan in Malaga is an exciting, magical night. The beaches of La Malagueta, El Palo, San Andrés, Sacaba and El Dedo will have thousands of celebrators jumping over bonfires by the coast at the stroke of midnight, and then diving into the waters according to traditions. And then, fireworks. Old stuff are burned, like ragdolls representing national figures, old notebooks, books, and old furniture, to signify the end of the past and welcoming the new - like the start of summer. Concerts and parties entertain till dawn. At the Parque del Oeste, the main celebrations with musical numbers and traditional dances take place. The morning after is the actual feast day of San Juan.
