    Malaga Weather for August 2022

What's the Weather Like in Malaga in August

August is generally the hottest month of the year in Malaga although the intensity of the heat is generally tempered by the proximity to the nearby Mediterranean Sea, which is cooler than the prevailing daytime temperatures over the land surface of southern Spain.

Cooling sea breezes are thus normal, while sea fog is quite rare, unlike in the spring months (March - May).

The average daytime maximum temperature is 30°C and there is an average overnight minimum of 20.5°C, so while the daytime temperatures may be on the high side for some, conditions are usually very good for outdoor activities during the evenings and overnight.

Note though that sleeping can be difficult in the central parts of Malaga where there is a pronounced urban heat island effect and pollution levels are relatively high.

On rare occasions an import of hot air from northern Africa, combined with winds from the northern half of the compass, can result in significant heatwaves, with temperatures into the mid to high 30s Celsius and occasionally even into the low 40s, though not as hot as inland.

    Rain in Mlaga in August

An average August has just 6mm of precipitation and 1 day with measurable precipitation. Most Augusts are rain-free although short-lived thundery downpours crop up on rare occasions, most often near the end of the month. The very dry conditions combined with heat and sunshine occasionally trigger problems with fires along the Costa del Sol. At the end of August 2012 the hot dry weather contributed to a spread of fires through the Costa del Sol which affected the Malaga area.

The lack of rain is also accompanied by reliably high amounts of sunshine with a mean total of 309 hours, a mean of 10.0 hours per day. Thus August is not quite as sunny as July but this is mainly a consequence of the shortening hours of daylight, and the sun shines for a large majority of the time.

The average relative humidity is low at this time of year with a mean of 62%, and in addition, the humidity levels tend to be lowest when the weather is particularly hot, so hot weather combined with high humidity is very unusual at Malaga.

    Augsust Sea Temperature in Malaga

The average sea temperature rises to 24°C at this time of the year, which is swimmable though fairly cool. However, many of the shallower stretches of sea near the coastline are rather warmer than that, so there are usually good places to swim off the coast of Malaga at this time of year.
