Things to do in Madrid in August

Almudena Cathedral

One of Spain's premier churches, Almudena Cathedral in the heart of Madrid is a sight to behold and a real feat of architecture. Lying adjacent to the Royal Palace, the cathedral was constructed only as recently as 1879 although its origins date back much further than that. Pay a visit to the onsite museum to learn more about the timeline for the construction of the museum, before enjoying views over Madrid from its majestic dome.

National Archaeological Museum

Antique aficionados should head straight to the National Archaeological Museum, one of the largest museums of its kind in the world, which reopened to the public recently after extensive remodelling. Bringing together works and collections from across the Mediterranean, the museum spans from the prehistoric era to the present day and places a big emphasis on interactive learning, making this an immersive museum experience. The Lady of Elche stands out as a particular highlight worth viewing here.

Puerta de Toledo

Any visitor to Madrid will notice that there's no shortage of public monuments and grand statues in the city, of which Puerta de Toledo is one. Proudly guarding over the city's boulevards, this impressive getaway was built in the 1820s and is a fine example of Neo-Classical sculpture and building in Madrid.

San Lorenzo de El Escorial

If you're looking to escape the city and crowds, consider taking a day trip to San Lorenzo de El Escorial. Tucked away in the mountains some 50 kilometres from Madrid, this magnificent town is most famous for its stunning monastery, which was marked out as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984.

Whether or not you're religious, you'll no doubt be blown away by the magnitude and imposing aura of this historic town and monastery. The surrounding Sierra de Guadarrama forms a beautiful backdrop to this peaceful and finely-preserved site.
