Weather
The four of us stayed in the area for five days. The weather was hot, sunny and fabulous during the last week of August!
Holiday
Superb and relaxing. Food and drink were delicious. We visited the Acquarium..such fun; Ile de Re...dining out at dusk by the harbour, watching the sunset, spent a day at Marais Poitevin on the waterway canals by boat were all relaxing and refreshing.
Places Recommended
Yes, walk everywhere at La Rochelle...beautiful shops..bought an item of clothing like nowhere else; go to Ile de Re over the bridge...walk over or drive over it; see the Tower...historial connection with Quebec, Canada and do go to the Marais Poitevin area for a half day boating trip on the canals. It is amazing.

Weather
Having visited La Rochelle on many occasions I can say that it can be wonderful, hot sunny and clear or overcast and raining! Usually if it rains the sun comes out in the afternoon!
Holiday
Excellent place, very good food lots to see and do. If the weathers not too good go to the historic sites, museums and eat and drink in the numerous restuarents.
If the weathers good go to the town beach or Chantillion plage for sun sea and wonderful beaches or take the bus to lovely Il de Rae, which we done it is an island connected by a bridge and is totally different from the old new part of La Rochelle. We also visited Minimes by water taxi and took a boat to Fort Byoard, Oberan and Aix.
Places Recommended
The old port of La Rochelle, Chantillion plage(wonderful beach) a short bus ride from the bus station.
The market square, stalls with lovely wares.
All the historical sites, the town hall, the towers......so much to see.
Also visit other parts of the town e.g L'Homme

Weather
The weather in mid-late August was very mixed, both day to day and throughout the day. Often the mornings were overcast and breezy then glorious sunshine late afternoon. We used everything from brolly to bikini in our 10 days. Go prepared !
Holiday
We had a great holiday - only the weather let us down a little. There is so much to do in and around La Rochelle even without a car. It's not a 'beach' holiday although there are a few, so if you're fairly active, like to visit historical attractions (nothing too high-brow) and like good food and wine, then this is an ideal place to visit.
Places Recommended
The Towers of La Rochelle are a must, the maritime museum was interesting, the Aquarium is good for adults and children. We also took the train down to Rochefort which cost about £10 return and took 30 mins each way. There, we visited the Hermione which is a re-construction of a battleship which sailed hundreds of years ago. The project is funded purely by donations and the aim is to rebuild it with the same materials and tools as the original.
