1. Madeira, beautiful scenery & plant life, but for beaches it has to be Porto Santo
WeatherWeather for the week: very warm to hot, approx 28 degrees celsius, changeable from sunny to rainy. I would say good weather on the whole.
HolidayMadeira is a beautiful island which has to be explored to fully appreciate its breathtaking scenery and plant-life. My mum and I even feel safe enough to walk around on our own in the evenings, which is very rare these days. Also, there is no "lager lout" culture. We treated ourselves to a staye in a lovely 5-star hotel.
Places RecommendedThere are many parks and gardens to be visited, a favourite being the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens, which can be reached by cable car from Funchal.
If it's beaches you are interested in, then I'm afraid to say Madeira is rather disappointing, but, on a short 2 hour morning ferry ride to the neighbouring island of Porto Santo, there is a great long stretch of beautiful sandy beach and aqua blue sea.
There are many coach trips on offer to visit the different areas of Madeira island, which should not be missed out.
Funchal itself is a lovely city - lots of shops and a bustling old market - don't miss a visit to the famous fish market, very eyecatching - but take a peg for the smells :o)
