August Weather Averages

Sorted by popularity:

August is a great time to visit Djerba, as the summer season is in full swing. Expect bright days, clear skies and plenty of heat throughout the hottest month of the year on this island off the coast of Tunisia, and some fantastic weather to enjoy.

The average high temperature in the region is usually around 33°C, but it can get far hotter. In 2002, Djerba recorded their highest ever temperature at 46°C, which means it is essential to be prepared for severe heat at all times.

Thanks to the dry summer, humidity is not such a problem in Djerba as it can be in other areas. And because of the off shore wind, the presence of a cool breeze could make the air much more comfortable. But even in the middle of the night, temperatures still average 23°C, making it warmer in Djerba than it is in many areas of Northern Europe in the middle of the day.

Across the entire month of August, average temperatures remain at approximately 28°C offering consistently warm weather to anyone who chooses to visit.

There is a decrease in the number of sunshine hours during August, when compared with the previous month. But with 9 hours of daily sunshine predicted, the days are beautiful. And it gives you the ideal opportunity to enjoy the sunsets too.

The average temperature of the sea is also quite hot. Water temperatures can rise up to 29°C ensuring you never feel a chill when enjoying the plentiful water activities across the island. It also ensures there's ample wildlife thriving in the warm waters, providing a haven for the divers and snorkelers that come to enjoy the area.

The dry weather continues throughout the hottest month of the year. It is common for no rain to fall at all throughout August. However statistically 10mm of precipitation are forecast to fall on a maximum of 1 day in the entire month.

Where to Stay

Club Magic Life Penelope Beach Imperial is one of the liveliest holiday resorts on Djerba, especially in August. The incredible volume of activities and wealth of entertainment ensures no one's at a loss for something to do. The pool facilities are outstanding, and incorporate water slides, chutes and an indoor pool within the amenities. On the beach, the sheer volume of activities ensure this is one of the highest rated places to go in the area, even if you are not staying at the hotel. And with playgrounds, restaurants and bars incorporated into the complex. When you want a holiday that never stops, book a room at the Penelope Beach Imperial.

For something a little more secluded, opt for a room at Dar Bibine. This very welcoming guest house is very popular with visitors who don't want to be in a large scale environment, but still want a very comfortable stay. Beautiful rooms boast traditional furnishing that offer a light, bright ambience to the entire hotel. The food is impeccable, the hospitality outstanding, and the location provides access to the entire island. Based in the small village of Erryad, roof top terraces provide exquisite views over the village and ensure you enjoy peace and tranquillity even in the busiest month of the year.

Club Marmara Narjess is the ideal place to stay for an economical alternative to the more costly resort hotels in Djerba. Though the prices are competitive, there has been no compromise on facilities or cleanliness, offering a great place to stay. The spacious rooms and fully functional air-conditioning are just perfect to combat the August heat. But when you are out of the room, the large pool is the ideal place to cool off. The entertainment facilities are fabulous and the food options are varied. The bungalow style accommodation gives a feeling of a village rather than a hotel, and with great quality massage facilities on site, a trip to Club Marmara Narjess can tick all the boxes.

Things to Do

For a more contemporary view of Djerba, take a trip to Djerbahood. It's like visiting a full scale open air art museum with different pieces displayed all over the village.  Artists from all over the world have come together in the town of Erriadh to produce an incredible display of visual art. Explore the village on foot to make sure you don't miss any of the exhibits. The white wash houses are the perfect back drop for such an eye catching display of street skill. And if you don't see all the exhibits the first time round, you can always go again to make sure you find them all.

Nowhere is the Jewish influence on this beautiful island more apparent than in El Ghriba Synagogue. Situated 4 miles south of the town of Houmt Souk, this is the oldest synagogue in North Africa, and questionably one of the most beautiful. It is said that this ancient temple also contains the world's oldest Torah scrolls. And with a truly enticing atmosphere for every visitor, take a trip to El Ghriba Synagogue for an experience you will always cherish.

Hit the Beach

The 8km beach is so called because it runs a full 8km or 5 miles from Houmt Souk. One of the only public beaches on the island, this beautiful location is very popular with the locals that like to avoid the hotel run sites and achieve a little more tranquillity. But in the peak summer season, don't expect this beach to be quiet. With a full range of activities and great amenities, you will have to walk a fair distance if you want to find a quiet spot.

For those that love their water sports, head down to Hotel Magic Life Penelope Beach. Even if you are not staying within the complex, there are a range of facilities on the beach, most of which are open to the public at an extra cost. It's young, it's lively and it's very active. But in peak July sun this beach will be busy. From kite surfers and wind surfers to snorkelers and divers. There is something for everyone at Penelope Beach.

Restaurants and Nightlife

In the day le centre Tapis Volant is a wellness facility that offers a wealth of massages and relaxation techniques to really ease the soul. But when the night falls, the decks start turning and Tapis Volant becomes a hive of activity. Sit outside and enjoy a drink in the warm August air. Or dance the night away in the nightclub inside. The cocktails are well blended and refreshingly cool, while the music will keep you entertained until the early hours. You may even be back the next day for a nice foot massage, just to get ready for another night of fun.

The La Taverne is a more laid back way to spend an evening in Djerba. Located inside the Hotel Haroun, you can enjoy a light snack with your cocktails or opt for a full blown meal. The options are flexible and so are the staff. Even in August the ambience in La Taverne is far more chilled than neighbouring hostelries. Sit out on the veranda or in the gardens for great views across the Zone Touristique. Or opt to stay inside and relax on the comfy sofa seating. For those that like their nightlife a little more low key, La Taverne has it all.

Take a trip to Midoun and sample the innovative cuisine at Rachid et Sophie. This fabulous little restaurant is located outside the usual tourist area, which means you don't have to pay premium prices. Instead you get high quality, home cooked meals at a cost that will have you coming back for more. The food is based on the traditional Tunisian palate, but there is always something a little bit different added into the mix. And with generous services and a very warm ambience, you probably won't even notice that there is no alcohol on offer.
