What's the weather like in Varadero in January

January in Varadero is a lovely time of the year with little rain, blue skies and mild temperatures. Located in the north east of Cuba and close to the equator the winter weather here is an ideal escape from the chills and misery of the European winters.

Rainfall

It is the middle of the dry season and the average rainfall is 20mm that will fall over 4 to 5 days. The rain will be in heavy showers of short duration giving you plenty of time to soak up the sun at the beach or exploring the area.

Temperature

The average temperature is 22°C that lies between the average high/low of 17°C and 27°C. This is the coolest month and one of the most comfortable in which to visit Varadero. Due to the tropical climate it can be quite humid before it does rain and then again after and the average humidity in January is around 80%.

Sea Temperature

Sea temperature varies little here from month to month with January seeing an average ocean temperature of 25°C which is 1°C down from December and just a few less than the top of 30°C in August. The ocean is pleasant to swim in all year round but it does get rough and dangerous during cyclones and hurricanes when many coastal areas will be closed.

Sunshine Hours

The sunshine hours are lowest seen all year with just 7 hours a day seen between November and February. The longest sunshine hours of 9 are seen in several months of the year.

Humidity

Due to the high humidity and cooling breezes the areas is susceptible to fog and for January you can expect up to 20 foggy days that will start to decrease towards the end of the month.

Varadero Beach

Varadero Beach is the longest beach in Cuba at more than 20 kilometres long. The beach contains many coves on its white sandy shores. Much of the water is calm with excellent vision underwater up to 30 metres in places. There are many activities to do from the beach that include scuba diving on the reefs, snorkelling, swimming, surfing, kite surfing, sun bathing and relaxing on a sun bed. The beach is the backyard for many resorts dotted along the shore.

Caribbean Riders Kite School

Caribbean Riders Kite School is located on Varadero Beach between the Iberostar Laguna and Memories Resort. The reliable trade winds make this part of the beach ideal for kite surfing. The beginner to the more advanced rider can have lessons here on the beach and improve their kiting techniques.

Waco's Club

Waco's Club is located on 3rd Avenue in Varadero and specialises in seafood and is named after one of Cuba's sporting heroes. Famous for their grilled lobster you can start your meal with a variety of salads or shrimps and continue with soup and then enjoy lobster, fish, paella and seafood BBQ. For the meat lover there is steak, chicken and pork.

Paladars

For all lovers of Italian food there is Paladars on Playa Varadero. All your favourites are here from Bruscetta, spaghetti, pizza, cheese selections, cold meat selection, salads and gelato and tiramisu for dessert.

Things to do in Varadero in January

Varadero Golf Club

For all golf lovers the Varadero Golf Club is located next to Melia las Americas. It is an 18 whole par 72 course with 3 distinct designs on the course. The traditional area has wider fairways with expansive unprotected greens, the next area is more challenging with narrow roads and more protected greens with sand traps and bodies of water. The third area is a links design with you needing to hit the ball over ocean inlets. You are able to rent clubs from the Pro Shop and even have a golf lesson here.

Bellamar Caves

For the nature lover you need to see the Bellamar Caves near Varadero Beach. These caves are more than 300,000 years old and a national monument in Cuba with a series of caves measuring 8,300 feet. In the main cave is the Mantle of Columbus a giant 40 foot stalagmite, galleries and tunnels and the underground stream. In the visitors com plex is a restaurant and a kid's playground as well as a museum. There are 2 famous fountains here, Fountain of Youth and Fountain of Love.
