St. Kitts Weather for August 2019

While August happens to fall in the wet season in St. Kitts, the total amount of rainfall during the month isn't anything to worry about. There is plenty of dry weather to be enjoyed—in fact, rainfall is quite rare, save the occasional shower or thunderstorms. Sunshine is plentiful; temperatures are high.

The mercury climbs to an average high of 31°C in the afternoons, which draws people to the island's many gorgeous beaches. The warm sea temperature, averaging 28°C, also invites people to spend their afternoons in the sand or in the water. Even in the evenings, the temperature remains absolutely wonderful. The average low of 24°C makes it perfect for simply sitting outside, watching the sunset, enjoying an outdoor meal or going for romantic beach walks. The overall average day temperature in August, as in the two previous and two following months as well, is 28°C. This is the warmest period of the year.

It is also the wettest time of the year. That said, though; with 100mm of rainfall in total, August can hardly be considered to be a soaking wet month. That 100mm of precipitation falls over 13 days, which means that rainfall is quite spread out. It happens in short showers or thunderstorms. Light rain is the most likely rainfall type to occur, observed on 44% of the days with rainfall. Thunderstorms happen on 33% of those days; moderate rain on 20%. The chance of rainfall on any given day is no higher than 20%.

On the other hand, the chance of a sunny day is 80% in August, which makes it abundantly clear how great a destination St. Kitts—and its neighbouring islands of Antigua and Montserrat—is, even during the so-called wet season. There are 9 hours of sunshine per day on average, which is more than enough time to get a tan, go for a swim and/or read a book in a park or on the beach. St. Kitts is a place where everything happens outside.

    Where to Stay

St. Kitts is one of the two islands that make up the island nation of St. Kitts and Nevis. Its neighbouring island of Nevis lies only two miles away and is also a superb place to visit. There are regular ferries between both islands, making it very easy to spend time on either island. Nevis is dotted with superb accommodations, such as Oualie Beach Resort. This three-star beachfront resort has 32 guestrooms and lies right at a beautiful sandy beach backed by palm trees. It has plenty of great amenities, ranging from wedding venues to the Chill Spa, a water sports centre and the Wheel World Cycle Shop.

Another recommended place to stay in Nevis is the Golden Rock Inn, housed in a building dating back to the 1800s and set on 100-acre grounds on the green slopes of Nevis Peak. There are 11 rooms, gorgeous tropical gardens, a freshwater pool and al-fresco dining areas. Popular activities include hikes in the lush forests, beach visits and mountain biking trips.

Montpelier Plantation & Beach is arguably one of the best accommodations in Nevis, possibly even in the entire Caribbean. This romantic and historic home offers its guests all modern comforts, incredible hospitality and superb wining and dining. This is also a popular wedding venue because of its magnificent location at a tropical beach backed by a verdant rainforest.

    Hit the Beach

With an afternoon temperature averaging 31°C, you will want to spend your afternoons on the beach and in the ocean. A superb place to do just that is in Banana Bay, a stunning beach situated at the very tip of the southeastern peninsula. This part of the island requires a car—or taxi ride—to get to, but is home to the greatest collection of beaches. Banana Bay beach has pristine water, soft white sand, coconut trees swaying in the sea breeze and undisturbed quietness.

    Eating and Drinking Out

A hugely popular venue in St. Kitts is the Reggae Beach Bar & Grill. It specialises in fresh seafood and barbecued meats—favourites include the grilled lobster, coconut shrimp, spare ribs and conch chowder. Occupying its own section of a gorgeous sand beach, this is also a strongly recommended place to go for refreshing cocktails. Amenities include free Wi-Fi, outdoor showers and a beach volleyball court.

Delicious Italian food is found at Ciao Ristorante Italiano in Frigate Bay. This popular and well-rated restaurant is the perfect place to go when you're craving Italian dishes. Its menu features everything from pastas to pizzas.

More ethnic food can be enjoyed at Karma Asian Cuisine & Lounge, also located in Frigate Bay. The restaurant serves mouthwatering Indian, Chinese and Thai food, while the club and lounge next door is the place to be for after-dinner drinks and parties.

    Things to Do

August may fall in the wet season, but the average temperature of 28°C and 9 daily hours of sunshine still indicate that there's plenty of time to enjoy the outdoors. A fun way to explore St. Kitts and its beautiful landscapes is going on an ATV tour with Spectrum ATV Tours, situated at the historic Wingfield Estate. These adventurous excursions take guests through sugarcane fields, over hilltops, past historic landmarks and through rainforests.

When you approach the Wingfield Estate, take the time to pay a visit to the Carib Petroglyphs, located on Wingfield Road in the village of Old Road. These ancient carvings show original drawings drawn by the Caribs.
