What's the Weather like in Rethymnon in January

Temperature

January is in the depths of winter in Rethymnon and experiences some of the coldest days of the year. But with average highs of 13°C in this first month, there are still plenty of days to enjoy some sun.

Historically, January has been the coldest month of the year in Rethymnon experiencing average temperatures of 10°C. But the weather varies so significantly day to day, you can never be sure what will come next. Average lows can fall as far as 7°C, with the lowest recorded temperature reaching just -1°C, which is far warmer than the weather experienced across a lot of Europe in January.

Conversely, January can also be very warm, with many days definitely offering t-shirt weather for its visitors. The highest recorded temperature of the month in this part of Crete reached up to nearly 26°C - which is far higher than many northern European average temperatures in the middle of summer.

Rainfall

January can be a relatively wet month in Rethymnon. There is an average of 15 days in the 31 days that usually experience some form of precipitation. However, with only 48mm of rain expected to fall throughout the entire month, the rain forecast can vary from a slight drizzle to a more significant downpour.

Sunshine

The number of daily sunshine hours in January improves on the previous month of December, offering up to 7 hours of forecasted sunshine hours every day.

Cloud

And with the chance of a cloudy day usually around 20%, there is a relatively high likelihood that you will experience a number of very good days if you visit Rethymnon during January.

Sea Temperature

Sea temperatures in this northern part of Crete are still relatively cool at this time of the year, averaging 17°C,  1°C on the average temperature of 16°C in December. This level will continue to dip in February and March, before its starts to climb towards peak summer conditions. This means only the very brave will tempt to swim in the sea during January, unless they are fully prepared for the consequences.

The combination of traditional Greek delicacies alongside fish and steak on the menu is imaginative and absolutely delicious. There is something for everyone at Castelo.

As one of the oldest restaurants in the city, Pagliaccio has built its reputation on offering high quality food for very reasonable prices. No wonder it has stayed in business so long! The warm interior is perfect for those colder January days, and all food is cooked fresh to order to ensure the best flavour. Even if you don't want the pizza, the selection of meat platters, pastas and seafood ensure a wide range of options. It's like a little piece of Italy in the middle of Rethymnon.

Things to Do in Rethymnon in January

Eleutherna

The ancient town of Eleutherna, just 30km from the centre of Rethymnon, provides a unique insight into Greek history. Sometimes called the 'Heart of Crete', historical references for this part of Greece date back to the Neolithic area with cisterns and fortresses still standing today. Take in the views that encompass the two Gorges this city was built across. They offer some perspective in how big this city really was. Though the trek up the hill can be arduous for those with walking or breathing difficulties. If you can make the walk, the outlook on its own makes this trip worthwhile.

Moschea Neratze

Moschea Neratze was originally St. Mary's Church. But since the building was transformed into an elegant Mosque during the Turkish invasion, it boasts one of the most elegant minarets and towers in the region. Though the site of the building is a treat in itself. Book to see one of the music concerts that are performed within its walls to experience the true beauty of this religious site.
