Being the middle of summer, December is a busy time in Milford Sound with many visitors enjoying the highest average temperature of 9 degrees to 18 degrees Celsius. Summer also holds the record for the highest rainfall, with December having 648mm average rainfall and 17 days of rain.  A combination of sunny and rainy weather during this time allows visitors to see the many faces of Milford Sound.

Descend Scubadiving provides Milford Sound diving trips that explore sites legendary to this resort. Guided diving trips can start off from Queenstown, Te Anau or Milford Sound, and include gear and a guide. The world heritage marine reserve is home to legendary black coral trees that grows up to 6 metres, red corals, seals, penguins, snake stars, sea pens, sea dragons, spotted dog sharks and more than 150 species of fish.

Viator offers a full day Milford Sound and Fiordland Park tour originating from Te Anau. This tour will travel along Lake Te Anau and enters Fiordland National Park along Eglington River to three mountain lakes. A cruise on Milford Sound is included, as well as a BBQ lunch at Cascade Creek in the park, or a buffet lunch during May and August to October. If the weather permits, there will be extensive bush walks to enjoy as well.
