July Weather Averages

Sorted by popularity:

With July comes some of the warmest weather of the year. As a result, this is the height of the tourist season for Edinburgh. With so many visitors in the city, be sure to budget for higher costs both for flights and also for hotel rooms. Additionally, if you choose to travel during this time of the year, be sure to make reservations as far in advance as possible in order to make sure that you have the room you want and can even get into that popular restaurant.

Temperatures during the month tie the month of August for the warmest temperatures of the year. Overall, the average daily temperature is 15°C (59°F). This is a far cry from how cold it was just a few months ago. While a light jacket is still needed early in the morning, the afternoon temperatures are very pleasant during this time of the year. Temperatures will fall to an average overnight low of 11°C (52°F). However, temperatures will quickly climb to an average of 19°C (66°F) by the later afternoon.

This is also a prime beach month for those who would like to enjoy the nearby waters while they are in town. While a wetsuit is probably still a good idea, it is possible for visitors to enjoy a myriad of water sports in the 14°C (57°F) waters. If that is just a little too cold for you, there are always the beaches where you can soak up some sun. Throughout the month, the region will experience an average of 7 hours of sunshine a day; plenty to enjoy while being out and about.

Be prepared for periods of light rain as throughout the month, the region registers an average of 70mm of precipitation. Much of the rain is light in nature and will only last a short amount of time before dissipating and allowing visitors to continue with their outdoor activities. Overall, two-thirds of the month is wet with an average of 20 days experiencing precipitation.

Where to Stay

The Old Town Chambers offers guests all of the amenities of home, but in a five-star atmosphere. The hotel is comprised of luxury apartments that are both modern and ancient at the same time. Many rooms have the original stones, brickwork and gabled ceilings while combining the old with free WiFi, luxurious linens, smart TVs and fully furnished kitchens.

With a total of 168 rooms, The Balmoral Hotel is one of the best in the city and perfect for a romantic July getaway. Located where the Old City meets the New City, the hotel has been a feature in the city for over a century. Be sure to take advantage of the onsite spa as well as onsite Michelin starred restaurant and don't forget about tea in the Palm Court.

Combining luxury with contemporary comfort is the Nira Caledonia. This boutique hotel is located in the middle of the city centre and offers complimentary WiFi, flat screen televisions, and 24-hour room service. Each room is decorated with its own style and you are certain to find one that meets your needs and expectations.

Hit the Beach

With water temperatures of 14°C (57°F) now is the perfect time to hit the beach for a swim. One of the best places to do so is North Berwick beach. You will have to take a half-hour train ride to get there, but the effort is worth it once you experience the wide expanse of sand and the perfect swimming conditions. If you want to get out of the water, there are plenty of shops and restaurants to explore.

Restaurants and Nightlife

Azile is the place to be for food masquerading as art. With no traditional menu, the restaurant offers a five-course meal that is based around the freshest food of the season. Be sure to make your reservation early for this hot restaurant.

Schedule some time for a traditional afternoon tea at The Colonnades at the Signet Library. Located along the Royal Mile, this is the place not only for tea, but also for a beautiful lunch or a well-made cocktail later in the day. This is truly the place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

If you are a fan of beers, be sure to pay a visit toBrewDog Edinburgh. This worldwide chain allows guests to sample locally brewed beers and also regularly includes regular guest brews. The pub has such a wide array of selections; you are sure to find one that you like.
