    As autumn begins to set in throughout the region in September, temperatures begin to fall from their summer highs and the warmer temperatures of August. Additionally, rain amounts in Costa Dorada begin to creep upward as the seasons start to change. However, September can still be a great month to visit as the majority of the crowds have returned home and prices on both hotels and flights will start to fall.

    Temperature

    Vacationers will once again need to bring a light jacket or a few long sleeved shirts for first thing in the morning as temperatures will fall to an average overnight low of 19°C (66°F). Temperatures in the afternoon are also falling, but still very warm and summer-like. Average afternoon highs will climb to 28°C (82°F) under mainly mostly sunny skies. The overall average daily temperature is still a very pleasant 24°C (74°F).

    Sunshine Hours

    As with falling temperatures, the amount of sunshine will also be somewhat diminished. During this time of the year, the region sees an impressive 11 hours of sunshine, but down two hours from the previous month.  There is still a 100 percent chance of a sunny day for this time of the year.

    Sea Temperature

    Temperatures are also falling at sea in addition to on land during this time of the year. While it is still pleasant enough for a swim, average sea surface temperatures have cooled to 23°C (73°F) by the time the beginning of autumn rolls around.

Even if vacationers travel by car, there are more than 100 spots to park in.

    Things to do in Costa Dorada in September

    La Fiesta Major de Sitges

    During September, Sitges celebrates La Fiesta Major de Sitges, which is the biggest annual festival in honor of Sant Bertomeu.  During the fiesta, witness the processions of gegants (giants), capgrossos (big paper-mache heads), correfocs (fire runs) and bastoners (stick dancers).  Of course, the highlight of this event is the awesome fireworks display that is said to attract more than 200,000 people each year.  On the other hand, others attest that the real highlight is the thrilling castellers or human towers that show their prowess during the festivities. With only 30mm of rain in the month, there is little chance that the festival will be rained out.

    National Day of Catalonia

    The 11th of the month is the National Day of Catalonia. On this day Catalonia commemorates the 1714 defeat of the Siege of Barcelona during the War of the Spanish Succession. 

    The Sitges Wine and Food Fair

    The Sitges Wine Festival and Gourmet Food Fair is celebrated around the annual grape harvest.  There will be a wine show wherein guests sample the best vintages of the wineries in the area.  Restaurants prepare their menus in celebration of grapes and wine.  Grape picking festivals and a grape stepping contest will also be held.  The feast of Sant Tecla will be commemorated with a weeklong celebration with fireworks and daily parades. With afternoon temperatures still averaging 28°C (82°F), now is the perfect time to be outside.

    Feast of Sant Tecla

    Tarragona will also be celebrating the feast of Sant Tecla with parades of the mulassa (figure of a mule), gigantes, capgrossos and castellers or human towers. The 11-day celebration in honor of Sant Tecla will also have a pyrotechnics show, dances and masquerades. Another worthwhile gastronomic event is in Sant Carles de la Rapita where the restaurants of the city prepare the traditional food of Rapita and Ebro Delta.
