If you fancy a bit of a splurge in return for something swanky, Hotel Don Pepe Gran Meliá in Marbella offers world class comfort. This is a highly recommended resort with top end facilities and service. Located on Marbella's famous Golden Mile, it is ideally situated near many good bars, restaurants and clubs, plus some fantastic beaches. On-site are 184 double rooms, all with sea or mountain views and different suites depending on tastes and rates. The high quality facilities include a health club, one heated indoor swimming pool, and two outdoor pools, with one specifically for children, plus decent restaurants. The rooms come with mini-bar, a 24-hour room service guarantee and supremely comfy beds. The service is great as well.
Sunset Beach Club in Benalmadena is a four-star resort featuring two spectacular pools, bars, an excellent supermarket and even a bakery. Each room has air conditioning and a private balcony. There's plenty of fun entertainment programme, including a lively pool with music. Due to its generous size, this hotel will suit big groups of friends; however, if you're after somewhere more intimate and bespoke it's probably not going to be a top pick. Super clean premises, and the buffet breakfast goes down a treat with guests, especially those just want to fall out of bed and onto a lovely tasty spread!
Hostal Marbella in Fuengirola is far cosier and smaller than the previous two choices and offers a great range of amenities, attentive service and a great location right near the beach. A 24-hour reception is combined with a well-stocked reading corner in the lounge area, a lovely sunny roof terrace and a low-priced breakfast. Currently managed by a Swedish couple, this place feels like a home from home.
Escuela la Crujia in Velez-Malaga is a charming B&B nestled in Andalucía's glorious countryside. The B&B provides three guestrooms, two of which have their own kitchen. All rooms are en-suite standard. Situated close to the region's picturesque mountains but away from the heaving tourist areas, this place is a good choice for those seeking somewhere a bit more peaceful and personal.
The family-run hotel La Casa Torrox Pueblo in Torrox has eight double/twin rooms, all of which are clean and well serviced. This lovely little hotel is run like clockwork and the owners are super friendly. With good access to the nearby beaches, restaurants, bars and cafes, this hotel is an excellent choice. Be sure to give the hotel's bistro a go - it serves fantastic continental food.
Costa del Sol Beach for August
Playa La Carihuela in Torremolinos is a great beach to soak up the sunshine at what is now the hottest period of the year. With no steep hills or climbs to contend with this beach is handily flat, so it's easily accessible for people of all ages and abilities. It's also pristine clean and has designated sun lounger areas. There are lot of good cafes, bars and restaurants in the vicinity that serve food and drink throughout the day and into the evening. There's some good nearby shops, too.
With a length of 1200 metres, and 40 metres wide, El Cenicero Beach in Torrox located near Morche is up there as one of the longest beaches in the Costa del Sol. This urban beach can get pretty busy during the summer months, but it offers easy from nearby accommodation sites, and is popular with families. A parking lot for approximately 50 cars is also available (minus surveillance). There's also a café.
Bars and Restaurants
Local tasty tapas is the main cuisine served at the family-run Restaurante Altamirano over in Marbella. The excellent service given by the restaurant's experienced team of friendly waiters is a big plus They have worked in the kitchen and the restaurant for years, so really know the ins and outs of the menu and the specials of the day. This restaurant does get quite busy at weekends, so be patient it's worth the wait!
Things to do in Costa del Sol in August
There are a host of animal related attractions across the Costa del Sol. Two of the most popular with holidaymakers are based in Fuengirola and Benalmadena. Bioparc Fuengirola is a fantastic, if compact, modern zoo with a huge number of different animals. Located in downtown Fuengirola, the zoo's architecture stands out from other zoos in Spain, and the layout of the attraction is akin to an island due to the use of nature's finest plants and trees.
Sea Life Benalmadena is another firm family favourite and is a big hit with kids of all ages. Due to Sea Life's ethos, whales and dolphins won't be spotted here, however, visitors can enjoy educational presentations and fun feeding displays; depending on the animal in question, visitors may be able to help feed some animals. Sea Life Benalmadena contains a sea snake enclosure and a shark reef don't worry you won't need to feed any sharks!
