Things to do in Colombo in May
In May, the citizens of this Island nation hold the Vesak festival. This is the most important festival in the Buddhist calendar as it celebrates the birth, life and passing of the Buddha.
On this day, almost the entire nation stops working to participate in the numerous religious activities. Although the celebrations are carried throughout the city, Bhauddoloka Mawath Street, is where tourists will be able to see and appreciate the true beauty of the event.
Apart from the Vesak festival, tourists should visit all the other attractions the beautiful city has to offer. One of them is the ViharaMaha Devi Park. It is a great place to relax after a long day touring the City with its flowering trees, water channels and numerous fountains.
The park, which is located in Colombo's geographical center, used to be much larger. It was reduced when the Art gallery and the John De Silva memorial were built.
The park has two statues one of Queen Victoria and the other of the Buddha. Queen Victoria statue was erected to honour her rule over the Island nation, while the Buddha's is to honour the nation's traditional religion.
