    Algarve Weather for February 2017

What's the Weather like in Algarve in February

On average, February is slightly warmer than January at the Algarve, and it is usually mildest near the coast, while the hillier parts of the north of the region tend to be colder.

At the capital, Faro, the long-term average maximum temperature is 17°C, while the typical overnight minimum temperatures is a mild 9°C overnight. On very rare occasions, temperatures just below freezing have been observed, but for a large majority of the time the weather is frost-free.

The weather is often quite changeable during February and rain crops up from time to time, particularly when the jet stream tracks to the south of its usual position.

Some weeks are largely dry and sunny while others feature plentiful rainfall. At Faro there is an average of 52mm of rainfall during February, falling on an average total of 13 days.

Despite the fairly frequent rain, sunshine totals are somewhat higher than in central and northern parts of Europe, with an average of 165 hours of bright sunshine per February. This is an average of just under six hours per day, which is well over half of the possible total.

    Sea Temperature

The sea temperature off the coastline averages 14°C at this time of year, so it is not a good time of year for holidaymakers who would like to swim in the water off the resort's many beaches.

    Weather Hazards

Severe weather events are rare in the Algarve during February, but on rare occasions when the jet stream is further south than usual, deep low pressure systems can bring heavy rain, localised flooding and strong winds. The winter of 2009/10 was unusually wet in southern Portugal, including the Algarve region, with a combination of heavy rain belts, thunderstorms, and occasionally strong winds. In contrast, there were problems with drought in 2012 following a very dry winter.
