Things to do in Rome in December

Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore

Whilst you're sightseeing in Rome, set aside some time to visit the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. This basilica is one of the largest in Rome and despite having a rather mediocre exterior, the inside is absolutely amazing.

The stained glass windows, painted ceilings, sculptures and even the floors are all fantastic, so don't forget to take your camera. If you're on a budget holiday, you can explore the church on your own, otherwise sign up for a guided tour.

Santa Maria degli Angeli

The Santa Maria degli Angeli is also worthy of a visit during your trip to Rome. This church forms part of the ruins of the baths of Diocleziano and was converted by Michelangelo. If you visit on a sunny day, you'll have the chance to see the basilica at its best, with sunshine streaming in through the artistic windows.

The Santa Maria degli Angeli is a lot quieter than many other churches, providing you with a much more spiritual and religious experience than you'll find at the more popular churches in the city.
