Things to do in Rome in April

Easter in Rome

It should come as no surprise that Easter is a huge event in Rome and you'll arrive on the tail end of Holy Week celebrations if you're visiting the city at the beginning of April.

The first Sunday of the month in 2018 marks Holy Mass in St. Peter's Square, which is worth attending, whether you're religious or not. Admission is free, but turnout figures are normally in the thousands, so expect to stand in queues for a long time. 

Founding of Rome Event

April also signifies the Founding of Rome and the event usually takes place on the weekend closest to the 21st of the month. A variety of events take place during this festival, from fireworks to gladiator re-enactments at the Colosseum.

It's a great and informal way to learn more about the city's history, and get a feel for the Roman spirit and character which continues to shape the place through to today.

Church of Sant'Ignazio di Loyola

The Church of Sant'lgnazio di Loyola is highly regarded as one of the most beautiful basilicas in the whole of Rome. Inside the church you'll find a stunning fresco covering the ceiling, dozens of miniature replicas of the church, pipe organs and ornate sculptures.

The church is completely free to enter and you can take as many photos as you like. If you wait for mass to finish, you'll be treated to free Bach concerts in the evening.

Chiesa del Gesu

If you'd like to admire another church during your holiday, head on over to the Chiesa del Gesu. Located within the Piazza del Gesu, this church provides a peaceful haven in the middle of the busy city.

Story of St Ignatius

Held every day at 5.30pm, this service tells the story of the life of St Ignatius in Italian, complete with music and spotlights which focus on various sections of his tomb during the storytelling. After the service, the baroque statue of St Ignatius is revealed this is the only time you ever get to see the statue.
