Things to Do in Riviera Maya in February

Akumal Monkey Santuary

Animal lovers won't want to miss the chance to visit the Akumal Monkey Sanctuary in Akumal, where you'll find lots of animals, including hundreds of species of birds, ducks, horses, donkeys, deer and iguanas. You can explore the trails on your own to discover the open-air enclosures where you can watch the resident monkeys playing freely. The sanctuary's tour is very popular and features a trip around the centre, a trek through the Mayan jungle and swimming in cenotes.

Akutan Chen

If you appreciate natural scenery, be sure to visit the Aktun Chen in Akumal an underground cave which features bizarre rock formations and a huge natural pool. The fascinating rock shapes make this spot a popular place to scuba dive and snorkel. As well as the aquatic activities, Aktun Chen also offers a zip wire and numerous jungle trails which are full of wild monkeys and snakes. There are often many mosquitoes and bugs about, so make sure you take some repellent with you.

Dates for the diary

Usually held during the last week of February, the CEA Annual Festival Waves of Change takes place in various venues throughout Riviera Maya. There is a huge range of events and activities for the whole family to enjoy, including auctions, games, lectures, exhibits, music concerts, raffles, sports and gala dinners. All proceeds from the event go toward CEA's Conservation programmes.

Cozumel celebrates Mardi Gras during the middle of the month with a number of carnival events, which conclude every year on 'Fat Tuesday' with colourful parades. In addition to the closing procession, the week is also filled with live music concerts, traditional food and drinks and a great party atmosphere.
