October Weather Averages

Sorted by popularity:

October is the start of the autumn season in Ponta Delgada, offering plenty of warm days and cooler nights. But as the month progresses, the level of rainfall can increase significantly.

As part of the hurricane season, Ponta Delgada in October is highly unlikely to be hit by its own hurricane. But the weather is still affected by the events that occur nearby.

This means that, as the month progresses, Ponta Delgada is likely to become wetter and wetter, until it reaches November, the second wettest month in the entire year.

Across the month of October up to 16 days are likely to experience some form of rainfall. And while some showers can be quite light, there are some significant down pours. In total, 114mm of rain are likely to fall in October, signifying the end of the dry season of the peak summer months.

While average high temperatures can still reach up to 21°C throughout October, the air definitely becomes cooler in the evenings and at night. In October average lows will fall to 15°C. And while this is still much warmer than the weather back home, for a sub-tropical climate, this is an indication that winter is on its way.

There are still plenty of good days to be had at this time of the year. Though cloud cover does become thicker in October, there are still forecasted to be an average of 7 hours of daily sunshine across the region. This ensures some very good patches of bright sunny weather in between rain and clouds.

In a time of such change, it is wise to check the weather forecast before planning any day out, especially if you are visiting one of the peaks on the island. That way you can ensure visibility will be good and the clouds will not spoil the view.

Where to Stay

Though Lince Azores Great Hotel is a relatively large hotel, the service is still very personable. Whether you want recommendations for places to go or need some help in your spacious room, the staff are always obliging. The hotel is of an exceptional standard, with all public areas maintained to a very high quality. And as it is only a 10-15 minute walk to the marina or the centre of town, the location is convenient without being too close to be affected by late night noise. A pool, hot tub and gym offer the perfect opportunity for a little exercise during your stay. But for those that want to take life a little gentler, time in the sauna or a good massage may well be on the cards.

Located on a quaint street in the middle of Ponta Delgada, Residencial Alcides offers an authentic atmosphere, good quality accommodation and great value for all of its guests. The hotel is just a short walk from many local points of interest and on the same street as many bars and restaurants, so you won't need a car to get around. However if you do choose to tour the rest of the island without using public transport, your own vehicle is a must. The rooms are simple but still very comfortable. And though the accommodation at the back of the hotel is a little darker, they are far quieter. With very friendly staff and a fabulous atmosphere, stay at Residencial Alcides and you will be very glad you did.

If you want to be right in the centre of Ponta Delgada, then book a room at Wazores. With a wealth of up to date amenities in every apartment, this is the ideal choice. Eleutherio, the owner, is on hand to make sure you know exactly what to see. And if you want him to, he will even take you himself. But when you can come back, you will feel nothing but comfortable in these spacious, well maintained apartments. In October the area will still be busy, but with plenty of choice of restaurants and bars outside your door. Or for an extra special treat, book an apartment with a balcony. That way you can enjoy the sights of Ponta Delgada without even leaving your room.

Restaurants and Nightlife

For good food, good scenery and a great night out, book a table at Baia dos Anjos. Situated directly over the Marina in Ponta Delgada, take a seat on the veranda on a warm October evening and you will want to stay forever. You can opt just to enjoy a few drinks by the water or you can sample their menu of excellent cuisine. Prices will be a bit more than other inland locations. And you will be charged for any starters that the waiter brings to the table. But when you have a view this good, and a quality of food that will have you coming back for more, a few extra Euros on the bill is not going to spoil your day.

To experience the full range of flavours at Anfiteatro Restaurant & Lounge opt for the tasting menu and let the chef take control. This high quality restaurant enjoys challenging their guests with deep and intense flavours, all of which come with a set of beautifully matched wines.  While you're waiting for your meal enjoy the views out over the bay. The atmosphere is welcoming and friendly with a trendy buzz. This is not traditional cuisine by any means. This is the latest food construction that will challenge you on the way you think about food.

Restaurante Nacional is a great place to take the children. With large tables and very accommodating staff, this is a fantastic place for a family meal, without compromising on the quality of the food. The prices are very reasonable, especially when compared with restaurants closer to the seafront. But the choice of food and wine is still outstanding. For a taste sensation, opt for the grilled shark and finish off with some delicious caramel cake. The portions are large and the staff are friendly. It's the perfect way to spend time in Ponta Delgada.

Things to Do

You can't go to the Azores without seeing what is lying beneath the waters. Which is exactly why everyone should book a diving tour with Best Spot Azores Dive Center. This PADI five star diving school provides fully certified diving tours for all levels of experience. And will take you to some of the best spots across the island. The staff are a mix of marine biologists and professional divers to ensure you get all the benefits of both. That way you will be taken to the best sites to dive, and know exactly what you are looking at when you get there. Shipwreck dives, volcanic dives and offshore dives are amongst the options, offering you a true insight into the beauty below the waves.

Igreja Matriz de Sao Sebastiao is unquestionably one of the most beautiful buildings on the entire island of Sao Miguel, and a wonderful place to visit while staying in Ponta Delgada. Situated in the main square, this black and white structure has been the Parish Church of the town for more than 500 years, and still services the local community today. Ornate carvings with gold leaf design decorate the breath-taking interior. While on the outside the altars and external recesses are there to be enjoyed. As this is still a place of worship, no flash photography is permitted. But if you are lucky enough to visit during a service, you will be made to feel very welcome indeed.
