When winds blow in this way, they bring with them temperatures up to 10°C higher than normal and low visibility due to a high concentration of sand and dust in the air. When calimas occur, the local MET office issues a red, orange or yellow alert, just like they did in the fourth week of October 2014, when a yellow alert was put out for a calima which caused temperatures to reach 34°C between the 22nd and the 24th.
