Things to do in Madeira in April

The northern areas of Madeira offer unique opportunities to experience nature of a different kind. Madeira's Laurisilva forest is the largest in the world and also one of the best preserved, making it worthy of UNESCO's World Heritage Site List. Visitors should keep in mind that this is rainforest territory and the humidity levels are through the roof, so it might be worth taking a spare set of clothes with you to change into.

Ponta de Sao Lourenco is another nature hotspot worthy of a visit. Here you'll find stunning views which are best appreciated if you follow the 4km walking trail. This spot is known for its amazing sunsets, so if you grab your camera and head off on the walk around three or four hours before the sun sets, you should get some incredible photos.

If you fancy a swim but aren't keen on sand, spend a day at the Lava Pools in Porto Moniz. This popular spot boasts a number of rock pools located along the sea front which you can swim in. If the sea is particularly wavy, the Lava Pools will be closed, so make sure you go on a calm day. When you've had enough with swimming, you can chill out in the bar or restaurant.

A Funchal attraction worth checking out is the Teleferico Cable Car and Botanical Gardens. Located just outside the town, visitors are whisked up the verdant mountainside to a lush tropical garden, which comprises over 2,500 exotic plants which are neatly incorporated into the grounds.
