This beautiful and historic town has been a popular religious site for over 150 years.  Since the reports that the Virgin Mary had appeared eighteen different times to a woman who lived in Lourdes, the town has turned into a very popular place for both miracles and healing as well as for Roman Catholic pilgrimages

In fact, Lourdes is now the second most popular tourist site in all of France due to the massive amounts of people making the pilgrimage.

For those who make the pilgrimage, or anyone else who is interested in religion or history, there are many must-see sites in Lourdes.

One of these famous sites is the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.  This beautiful basilica was the first basilica in Lourdes, built between the late 1860s  and early 1870s and is located on top of the rock above the Grotto.

Located close to the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception is the Basilica of the Rosary, which was built in 1901.  This basilica features mosaic panels that depict all 15 mysteries.

Finally, located in this same area, is the Grotto of Massabielle.  This is known as the holiest site in Lourdes and is the area in which Bernadette saw the Virgin Mary.
