Pizza Man

For something heartier, try Pizza Man. This authentic Italian pizzeria has eight locations throughout Florence and is best known for its Neapolitan pizza, although there are eight other options available, including maritime and caprese.

All pizzas are made from locally-produced dough and fresh ingredients, which makes a huge difference, since the pizza toppings are somewhat basic. Taking into consideration the quality of the food and the cheap prices, Pizza Man is superb value for money.

Antica Trattoria "da Tito" dal 1913

Antica Trattoria "da Tito" dal 1913 is the place to go if you want authentic Florentine food in romantic surroundings. Open since 1913, this restaurant serves up a wide selection of Italian dishes, including meat and cheese platters, freshly-prepared pastas, soups, stews, meat roasts and steaks grilled on hot stones.

Whilst all the dishes here are truly spectacular, the steaks are the stars of the show, served up in a contemporary artistic way on wooden platters. Open Monday to Saturday from 12.30pm until 3pm for lunch and from 7pm until 11pm for dinner, this restaurant is so popular that reservations are practically obligatory. 

Things to Do in Florence in April

Piazza della Signoria

The L-shaped Piazza della Signoria is the most-visited square in Florence. Situated in front of the 14th century Palazzo Vecchio, this square is home to many other famous buildings, including Loggia dei Lanzi, Tribunale della Mercanzia, Palazzo Uguccioni and Palazzo delle Assicurazioni Generali. The square also boasts several important statues, including a copy of Michelangelo's David, Bandinelli's Hercules and Cacus, Ammannati's Nettuno and Giambologna's Cosimo I.

Even if you're not interested in the buildings or statues, this tourist hotspot is still worth a visit, thanks to the numerous street performers who provide you with plenty of free live entertainment during your visit.

Janniderma

Get your hands on some authentic Italian fashion by shopping in Janniderma. Open 10.30am until 8pm in April, this shop specialises in leather goods and sells a huge selection of men and women's jackets, coats, trousers, corsets and handbags made by well-known international designers and local artist and owner Jannis Skarmoutsos.

You can either buy things directly from the shelves or have items personally designed and produced just for you. Everything here is made from only the finest quality leather with great attention to detail to ensure that the stitching is perfect and the material is light, as well as water resistant.

Basilica of Santa Maria Novella

The Basilica of Santa Maria Novella is located across from the main railway station and is the first great basilica built in Florence. The structure dates back to the 13th and 15th centuries and features a green and white marble façade which transitions from Romanesque to gothic, with the doorway and the upper section having been designed by Leon Battista Alberti. The basilica is home to a vast collection of art and funerary monuments, with many important frescoes by masters of the early renaissance and gothic periods which were donated by Florentine families.

When you first enter, you'll have a clear view of Masaccio's Trinity fresco, as well as the luminous crucifix painted by Giotto hanging in the central nave. The chapel to the right of the altar features late 15th-century frescoes depicting the lives of St Philip the Apostle and St John the Evangelist, whilst the main altar boasts a series of frescoes related to the life of the Virgin Mary.

Cappelle Medicee

Cappelle Medicee (known as the Medici Chapels in English) is made up of two structures next to the Basilica of San Lorenzo which date back to the 16th and 17th centuries. Originally built as extensions to the 15th century church designed by Crunelleschi, the Sagrestia Nuova was designed by Michelangelo and the Cappella dei Principi designed by the Medici family and several architects.

The chapels are divided into three parts the crypt which houses the bodies of the minor members of the family alongside their tombstones, the Chapel of the Princes which boasts a huge dome designed by Buontalenti where the six Medici Grand Dukes are buried, and the New Sacristy which features sculptures and sarcophagi (designed by Michelangelo) of Dukes Lorenzo and Giuliano. Cappelle Medicee is open daily from 8.15am until 1.50pm.
