What's the weather like in Costa Teguise in January

Costa Teguise, Spain, is a small town situated on the eastern coastline of Lanzarote. Although, Lanzarote is a part of the Spanish Canary Islands chain in the Atlantic Ocean, the island is actually closer to Northern Africa, namely Morocco, than it is to mainland Spain and the town enjoys the same warm weather as the African continent.

January is both the coldest month in Costa Teguise in terms of air and sea temperatures and one of the wettest, but these conditions are still preferable over a typical British January.

Rather than the sub zero temperatures and icy storms, Costa Teguise sees temperatures range from a pleasant 14°C overnight to a warm 20 during the day, similar to Lanzarote's capital Arrecife. Sea temperatures hover around the 19 degree mark, while rainfall is a modest 30mm on average across the month.

Temperature

January is characterized by essentially constant daily high temperatures, with daily highs rising to 20°C throughout the month, with the temperature only dropping below 18°C one day in ten.

The daylight hours at this time of year tend to stay constant with the shortest day of the month being January 1st with 10:09 hours of daylight, whilst the longest day is January 31st with 10:48 hours of daylight.

Furthermore, the cloud cover at this time is generally low. The median cloud cover in Costa Teguise is a partly cloudy 45% and does not vary substantially over the course of the month. On January 16th, a representative day, the sky is clear or mostly clear 31% of the time, while it is only 16% likely to be overcast.

Rainfall

You also won't have to worry too much about serious rainfall during January even though it is supposed to be one of the wettest months of the year! On average, the probability that some form of precipitation will be observed is only a mere 22% with little variation over the course of the month. However, if it does rain in January the most common forms of precipitation are drizzle, moderate rain and light rain.

Humidity

During January the relative humidity typically fluctuates between a mildly humid 57% and a very humid 89%, rarely dropping below 39% or reaching 100%. On average the air is driest around January 28th in Costa Teguise, at which time the relative humidity drops below a mildly humid 64% three days out of four. On the other hand, the air is likely to be most humid around January 1st, where humidity levels are expected to exceed 84% three days out of four.

Wind

Costa Teguise is also renowned for being a windy area, however, it is very unlikely it will affect your holiday. Over the course of January typical wind speeds vary from 5 mph to 18 mph, which is considered as a light to moderate breeze. At this time of year the wind is most often coming from the north, followed by the northeast.

Costa Teguise Hotels for January

Apartamentos Santa Rosa are located just a 10 minute walk from the beachfront and offer rooms from £23 per night. Costa Teguise Beach for January

At this time of year the idea of taking a dip in the sea may not sound that appealing, but believe it or not the sea temperature is usually around 19 degrees during January.

Costa Teguise is also very quiet at this time of year so you will virtually have the beach to yourself. If you're looking for somewhere where you can get a winter tan you may want to head to Caleta Caballo Beach. This tiny beach, only 60m wide features fine white sand and an idyllic setting. It is a little more sheltered here and can be accessed by bus or car as there is a parking area right next to the beach.

Bars and Restaurants

Jesters Bar is one of the most well known and well visited bars in the town. This English-run establishment is especially popular during the early hours, as it's one of the only bars in Costa Teguise that remains open until 4am. There's a nightly DJ and dance floor, although for those looking for a quieter time, there's also a relaxed area with TVs showing British sporting events. As well as beers, ciders, wines and cocktails, this place is also known for its range of shots, including the unique 'Jester Cake'.

However, if you want a more authentic "Canarian" experience you should definitely try Restaurante El Navarro in Costa Teguise. This eatery serves local Spanish and Canarian cuisine with a modern twist. This restaurant is so good it has previously been voted the top restaurant in Costa Teguise on Trip Advisor and ranks highly in the whole of Lanzarote.

Another restaurant that's worth a try is La Tabla. This place offers seriously delicious tapas in an authentic Spanish setting. The restaurant also features an outdoor terrace which is perfect to sit out on a warm winter day with a cup of coffee.

To celebrate the New Year why not head to Hennessey's Irish bar, located in Costa Teguise. This lively pub boasts stunning views out onto the beach and ocean. The bar also stocks a great array of beers and ales from Guinness to Baileys, if you're feeling a little bit peckish they also serve snacks and meals throughout the day.

Things to do in Costa Teguise in January

On a rainy day, the Fundación César Manrique is a great way to spend an afternoon. The home of famed Spanish artist César Manrique is designed in the contemporary art style he was renowned for. A selection of his most famous works can be seen in the adjoining gallery. Manrique was born just down the road in Arrecife, but lived at the Fundación during his adult life. The property not only gives a look at Manrique's public life but also his personal life and is particularly suited to lovers of modern or abstract art.

As January boasts a warm climate at this time of year, with limited rainfall you may see it as the perfect chance to have a round of golf. The Costa Teguise Golf Club features 18 challenging holes designed by John Harris in 1978. The course includes over 3000 palm trees and offers an extinct volcano as its backdrop. The overall design of the course is soft and varied with many obstacles such as sand bunkers and sloping hills.

On the other hand, if you are here with the little ones you may want to take them to the Lanzarote Aquarium. This place is the largest aquarium in the whole of the Canary Islands, featuring more than one million litres of water distributed into 33 different tanks. There are superb views of hundreds of marine species from across the globe including sharks and sea turtles.

The Lanzarote Active Club offers unique hiking excursions around the island of Lanzarote where you can learn about local flora and fauna, as well as the island's interesting volcanic history. There are also guided walks offered by Lanzarote Active Club and boat excursions, bird watching trips and wine experiences.

Dates for the diary

What better way to nurse that hangover or relax from the previous night by spending the day by the beach on New Year's Day. Las Cucharas Beach is one of the most popular beaches in the area, found right by Costa Teguise. The beach offers clear, calm waters and golden sand, making it perfect for sunbathing.

Dia de Los Reyes (The Day of Kings) is celebrated annually on 5th January. Every year are various parades held throughout Lanzarote to celebrate the special occasion. These include three camel riders, dressed as the Three Wise Kings who throw sweets to children. The largest procession is held in Lanzarote's capital Arrecife, where the event usually commences at 6pm.
