What's the weather like in Bordeaux in September

Since its establishment back in 300 B.C. Bordeaux has maintained its rich history and culture for visitors to enjoy. The city has seamlessly combined the old with new, adding modern attractions and amenities amidst the historical sites. Come September, the crowds die down but the temperatures remain warm, making it a great choice for a holiday away.

Temperature

The average daily temperature reaches up to 19°C (about 66°F), an ideal temperature for being outside discovering the city.

Unfortunately, many of the vineyards close down this month because of the busyness of the harvest season. You can still get your taste of fine wine, however, by visiting one of the city's amazing restaurants, most of which serve Bordeaux wine.

The low temperature drops down to 13°C (around 55°F), typical for autumn. During the day, the highs still get up to 25°C (around 77°F), so summer clothing like short-sleeved shirts and shorts are still appropriate. Bring along a jacket or light sweater for the evening hours, especially if you'll be outside. Also, be sure to pack your walking shoes for exploring.

During your stay this month, you can expect steady and moderate temperatures. While rare, this part of France has seen some extreme highs and lows during this month. The highest recorded temperature was a blistering 36°C (about 97°F), while the lowest recorded temperature was a cool 5°C (about 41°F).

Sunshine Hours

You get over six hours of sunlight each day, so you'll want to bring along your sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen to avoid a horrible sunburn. The chance of having a sunny day is 26% and the chance of clouds is 26%. The rainfall chances start to increase this month heading into the rainy winter months.

Rainfall

The area gets around 70 mm of rainfall during the month, falling over 13 days. Best to have that umbrella handy just in case, but the chance of rain on any given day is only 32%.

Bordeaux Beaches for September

Plage Oceane de l'Horizon

Located over an hour from Bordeaux in the Lege-Cap-Ferret area, Plage Oceane de l'Horizon has lifeguards on duty from June through to September. However, the beach gets a strong undertow year-round, so stay within the buoyed areas to stay safe. The beach has a rugged and private feel that you'll enjoy if you're looking for peace and quiet. You can reach the beach by a small train from Arcachon.

Things to do in Bordeaux in September

Parc de Majolan

One of Bordeaux's city parks, Parc de Majolan offers an interesting array of things to see and do in the wonderful September weather. The beautiful lake is home to coypu, little rodent-looking creatures that look a little like beavers and love to eat raw potatoes and fruit. The park is also home to several grotto caves that you can explore; the caves are filled with fairy lights and mirrored mosaics, making it feel magical. You can get a bite at the park's café or pick fresh vegetables from the co-op garden.

Tower of Pey-Berland

During your stay in Bordeaux, be sure to check out the Tower of Pey-Berland. Built around 1440, the tower features Gothic architecture with lots of intricate details. It's open year-round and gives visitors panoramic views of the city after they climb the steep and narrow staircase to the top. You can easily reach the tower via a local tram stop or on foot, as it's located near the centre of the city. Afterwards, grab a bite to eat at one of the local restaurants.
