Weather Overview

April in Akumal is a period of transition from the dry season to the wet one. While still mainly on the dry side, there is a slight increase in the amount of precipitation that falls now as compared to the previous month. As a result, if trips are planned during this time of the year, it might be a good idea to go during the first half of the month, as more rain is likely to fall during the latter half.

While still dry compared to the months that are yet to come, rain chances do rise from an average of 37mm of precipitation in March to 45mm in April. However, the average number of days experiencing precipitation is only 3 days. This is slightly lower than the previous month that saw an average of 4 days of rainfall. Additionally, the region experiences an average of 8 hours of sunshine per day throughout the month.

As the rainfall amounts begin to rise, temperatures are also rising on both land and in the sea. Average ocean temperatures for this time of the year are a warm 27°C (81°F). Temperatures such as these are perfect for the family to spend enjoying all the water sports of the region including scuba diving, snorkeling and more.

As a result, visitors should be certain to pack plenty of lightweight clothing as well as light colored clothing in order to stay as cool as possible. The average daily temperature is also a very warm 26°C (79°F) allowing visitors to remain comfortable throughout the day and night.

Hit the Beach

Because April is the traditional start of the wet season for the region, visitors will have to be more careful about when and where they hit the beach as to avoid getting caught in a torrential downpour of a local thunderstorm. However, if the weather is nice, then one of the best beaches to visit is Puerto Morelos Beach. Located just north of Akumal, this fishing village offers a laid-back atmosphere as well as clean, white sand and sparkling blue waters. Because this beach is generally not crowded, it can be a good place to spend some time alone or with a significant other. Snorkeling is very popular at this beach as is exploring the nearby lighthouse.
