Malta is mild and usually a bit rainy in December but the extensive Christmas celebrations make Christmas a special time of year to visit. You'll be able to enjoy Christmas markets, pantomimes and beautifully lit streets with colourful lights.

 A good nearby option for families with young children is the Mellieha Holiday Centre at Mellieha Bay. This resort boasts a children's play area, swimming pool and various other attractions.

The Splendid Guest House at Parish Priest Magri Street, Mellieha offers good B&B accommodation and highly-rated breakfasts.

Good budget options in Malta include the Porta del Sol at Xemxija Hill, St. Paul's Bay a guesthouse which, despite its budget prices, offers excellent views over the bay and some good eateries and facilities.

There are also many self-catering options and the Valletta Apartments 19, located on St Paul's street, are particularly suitable for families.

Malta Beach for December

December is not a good time of year to visit Malta's beaches due to the unreliable weather. If you do get a spot of warm weather and sunshine during your holiday, you'll be pleased to hear that there is a handful of beaches worthy of a visit.

The Sliema sea front contains no sandy beaches, but is home to numerous boat trips which depart from the bay, including Grand Harbour cruises.

Ghadira Bay at Mellieha Bay has numerous good facilities for eating and water sports, as well as for sunbathing and relaxing if your stay coincides with a fine spell of weather.

Bars and Restaurants

Malta boasts a wide range of excellent places to eat and drink. The Commando Restaurant, situated at Misrah iz-Zjara tal Papa, Mellieha, serves a wide range of cuisines, with a strong focus on Italian dishes.

For highly-rated grilled food, a good choice is the Chukkas @ Malta Polo Club at Marsa Polo Club, Marsa.

Malta also boasts numerous excellent wine bars. The Del Borgo Wine Bar at Birgu, Vittoriosa, serves great sharing platters, as well as a selection of superb wines.

Jazz fans should consider BJ's at Ball Street, Paceville, Saint Julian's, which features live jazz music after midnight. Saturdays are a particular popular time to stop by, when there are often feature performances from recognised jazz musicians.

The company behind the spa, Spas Myoka, also has 5-star spa facilities available at a few other locations around Malta.

Those who would prefer to try a massage can stop by the Siam Wellness Centre at 16 Paceville Street, Paceville. This centre offers a range of massages, as well as beauty and waxing treatments.

The Thai Sawdee Spa at Triq Gorg Borg Oliver, Sliema offers massages as well as spa facilities.

There are many good historical sites and monuments in Malta. Domus Romana at Museum Esplanade, Rabat covers the life of the site, with exhibits of Muslim tombstones, a draped female statue, a baby rattle and hairpins, among other attractions. There are many impressive decorative features including some ancient mosaics, one of the most famous being the Peristyle Mosaic.

Christmas Day 🛐

Malta celebrates Christmas Day just like many other countries in western Europe. This event is celebrated in both religious and social ways, with decorative nativity scenes, coloured lights, carolling and church services. Some of the highlights include the family-friendly pantomime held at the Manoel Theatre, the candle-lit carol singing at St. John's Co-Cathedral, the Christmas lights in Republic Street in Valletta at the Auberge d’Italie nativity scene in Valletta.
