The end of spring means longer days, higher temperatures, and lower rainfall amounts. The average daily temperature is 18°C (about 64°F), ideal for getting outside and enjoying activities like hiking, biking, and off-roading. The crowds haven't started arriving yet for summer holiday, so it's a great time enjoy a quiet time away.

    The low temperature still drops down to 12°C (around 54°F) during the evening hours. The highs get up to a warm 24°C (about 75°F), a great temperature to get outside and see the sites of the area. Your suitcase should have a light jacket and sweater for the cooler hours at night and in the early morning. During the day, short-sleeve shirts, shorts, and capris are a good choice. Check the local forecast before you head out each day to know for sure how to dress.

    Fortunately, the number of sunshine hours jumps almost two hours, with an average of 11 hours of sunshine each day of the month. You'll definitely want sunglasses, sunscreen, and maybe even a hat to protect your skin from sunburn. The average amount of rainfall actually goes up a little bit from April, to 44 mm on average. But, the rain falls over 9 days, so you'll still have more dry days than wet ones.

    Things to Do

    Located outside the town of Agios Nikolaos, the Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni invites guests to explore the steep cliffs that surround it. The church was built into a cave and visitors can wander the structure that was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and Zoodohos Pigi, or Source of Life in English. Along with tourists, the monastery is the destination for religious pilgrimages.

    Fun for the whole family, the Little Train Tours from Blue Train Sightseeing takes you on an adventure around the town. During the tour, you'll ride in an open air tram, perfect for enjoying the warm May weather and breezes. You'll see the towns of Agios Nikolaos, Elounda, Kritsa, and Vrouchas and get views of Mirobella Bay and the island of Spinalonga.

    The Greeks are known for their myths, legends, comedies and tragedies, and the ONE Group presents stage shows of some of the most famous Greek plays. The ONE Group is made up of young thespians on the island. The plays are done in English, but subtitles are shown in French, German, and Russian on the side of the stage, so guests from different nationalities can enjoy the show.

    Hit the Beach

    Set down from the mainland, Havania Beach is found on the northern end of Agios Nikolaos not far from Elounda. With soft sands, shallow and clear waters, and nearby restaurants, the beach is a great place to enjoy a warm sunny afternoon on the island of Crete. Umbrella rentals are also available.

    Tucked just below the road on the other side of the road to the Coral Hotel, the Coral Hotel Jetty isn't a beach in a traditional sense, but it still provides another place to lay out and jump in the water to cool off.     With a convenient location between the lake and the bay, Pelagos is a celebrity hot spot and popular stop for locals. The festive outdoor seating includes pergolas, soft lighting, colorful tables and chairs, a water feature, fish tank, and lush gardens to create a quiet and private setting. The menu features Greek cuisine ranging from appetizers to entrees to desserts.

    If you're looking for a fun night out on the town, come by the Zep Blues and Rock Bar serving up your favorite beers, wines, and cocktails. Throughout the week, you're treated to live musicians or DJs, playing good old fashioned rock and roll and blues to go with your drink. If you're feeling brave, try a Greek wine and break down in a traditional syrtaki, or Greek dance.
