Temperature

Punta Cana is situated on the eastern coast of the Dominican Republic. One of the most popular holiday resorts in the Caribbean for families and couples alike, this area is known for its tropical climate, which features loads of sunshine and high temperatures all-year-round. Despite it falling within the winter season, December is a great time to visit Punta Cana, with pleasantly warm temperature and relatively little rainfall throughout the month.

At this time of the year, the average temperature for the resort drops as the month develops, falling from 26°C on December 1st down to 25°C by December 31st. Daily highs and lows change in the same way, dropping down from 29°C to 28°C and from 23°C to 22°C throughout the month, respectively.

In recent times, the highest temperature that has ever been recorded in Punta Cana in December is 33°C. On the other hand, the lowest temperature which has ever been registered in the resort during this month is 17°C.

Rainfall

When compared to October and November, December experiences a relatively small amount of rainfall. During this month, the average rainfall for Punta Cana is 87mm – that's three inches. This precipitation is spread out over an average of seven days. Things to do in Punta Cana in December

The beautiful beaches in Punta Cana are ideal for relaxing and soaking up the sunshine. After topping up your tan, you can try out the large selection of water sports available. Hire a boat and become a captain for the day, rent some scuba diving equipment and explore the underwater coral reef or feel adrenaline rush through your veins whilst whizzing around on a jet ski. With so much to do here, you'll never get bored.

For an experience like no other, explore Punta Cana on an Xtreme Buggy tour. This action-packed excursion will take you through local villages, across sandy shores and past hidden caves, whilst leaving you with incredible memories you'll never forget. A buggy tour is one of the best ways to really get to know the resort and see more than the average tourist. This excursion is suitable for the whole family and is available in two itineraries – half day and full day.

The Marinarium is one of the largest marine park reserves in the Dominican Republic and is a must during your stay. The reserve offers a huge list of excursions so you're sure to find the exact thing to suit you. Enjoy a night diving trip to see all the underwater creatures that come out after dark or snorkel along the impressive coral reef, catching glimpses of colourful fish along the way. If you'd prefer something a bit drier, opt for one of the cruises which allow you to soak up the scenery of Punta Cana from a boat.

Dates for the diary

American football lovers won't want to miss the Monday Night Football Tailgate Parties which take place every Monday night at the Breathless Resort in Punta Cana. In 2014, the parties will be held on December 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd and 29th, giving you plenty of opportunity to catch one. During the parties, an American football match is broadcast on a huge screen, alongside plenty of food and drink for everyone to enjoy.

Between December 24th and 25th, the whole of Punta Cana celebrates Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. On these days and the weeks leading up to them, the resort is covered in festive decorations and there is a prestigious gala on the evening of the 24th, with live bands, entertainment, food and drinks. Christmas Day is mainly a family affair, with many locals hitting the beach after spending the morning at church.

The Christmas celebrations are followed by the New Year's Eve parties which take place on the night of December 31st. The Breathless Resort promises a party unlike any other, with a champagne brunch at the resort's restaurant, followed by a huge beach party. Later in the afternoon, the resort holds a cocktail party which is paired with a great buffet. Entertainment is provided at the theatre in the early evening before the New Year's Eve celebrations kick off at midnight with cocktails and a firework display.

Although the official dates have yet to be released, the Sixth Annual David Ortiz Celebrity Golf Classic is scheduled to take place at sometime in December 2014 at the Grand Resorts Sanctuary Cap Cana. This annual fundraiser is sponsored by the Dominican-American Boston Red Sox player David Ortiz and is in aid of underprivileged children who urgently need healthcare.
