At this time of year, the average temperature for Punta Cana rises slightly from 26.5°C on May 1st up to 27.5°C by May 31st. Daily highs increase from 29°C to 31°C and daily lows stay constant at 24°C as the month develops.

In recent times, the highest temperature ever recorded in Punta Cana in May is 38°C, whilst the lowest temperature ever registered in the resort during this month is 14°C.

Since it marks the beginning of the wet season in Punta Cana, May sees a fair amount of rainfall when you compare it to April or March. At this time of the year, the average rainfall for the resort is 71mm (three inches) which is spread out across four days of the month. On May 3rd 2014, Dreams Punta Cana Resort & Spa hosts the 138th Annual Kentucky Derby. A must-see for sports lovers, this event is held at the hotel's sports bar where mint julep cocktails will be everywhere you turn. In addition to the horse racing, there will be plenty of other activities for everyone to enjoy, including a hat competition and family-friendly games.

Punta Cana celebrates the Mexican festival of Cinco de Mayo on May 5th each year. The main festivities take place at Dream Punta Cana Resort & Spa where you'll find a lively atmosphere, loads of Mexican food and drinks on offer, traditional Mexican entertainment and authentic decorations.

Between May 7th and May 10th in 2014, the Punta Cana Riu Resort hosts the 40th Anniversary WCMA (World Congress of Martial Arts) World Cup. This sports event is held at the Playa Arena Gorda beach outside the hotel and was created by Dr. Harold L. Mayle in 1975. A must for martial arts enthusiasts, this event is sure to sell out, so make sure you get there early if you don't want to miss out.

From May 19th until May 24th in 2014, Punta Cana hosts the Cap Cana Fishing Tournament. This annual sporting event takes place at Cap Cana and focuses on both blue and white marlin, both of which are in abundance in the seas around the Dominican Republic at this time of year.  

Things to do

A trip to Punta Cana isn't complete without a canopy adventure zip line tour. This course is the biggest in the Dominican Republic and features 700 metres of zip lines built within the canopies of the trees. Discover more about the local flora and fauna of Punta Cana at the Indigenous Eyes Ecological Park and Reserve. This fascinating park is suitable for the whole family and is comprised of various trails which lead to natural lagoons where you'll come across many different species of birds, reptiles and insects which live in the tropical region. In addition to the trails, lagoons and animal habitats, the park also features an iguana centre, petting zoo, sugarcane exhibition and fruit tree garden.

When it comes to do something on an evening, you can enjoy an unforgettable dinner on the beach at the Jellyfish Restaurant. Here you'll find a large international menu with a selection of fresh fish and shellfish dishes, as well as a special kids menu. The stunning restaurant is set inside a wooden structure with made out of wood, stone and palm leaves. Visitors can choose to dine al fresco on the beach or eat in the air-conditioned interior if they prefer.
