Averages for Florida in December

While December is a chilly or even freezing cold month in many other places in the Northern Hemisphere, in Florida it is still possible to hit the beach this time of year. It is the state’s (sub)tropical climate and location on a huge peninsula surrounded by tempering waters that are responsible for this delightful weather.

In the afternoons, you can enjoy average high temperatures of 22°C, with peaks into the mid-20s and even higher. At night, you might need a light jacket this time of year, though, as the average low temperature is at 10°C. Those temperatures decrease a tiny bit in the course of the month before they hit their annual minima in January. The overall average temperature in December is 16°C, which is the same as in January and February, the other “winter” months. Swimming is still very much possible in Florida in December though—the sea temperature averages 25°C now, which is amazingly warm.

December is characterised by its relatively short day lengths. December 21 is the shortest day of the year, with 10.21 daylight hours—which is still quite high. The other days of the month are only slightly longer. It is because of these shorter days that December days “only” has 7 hours of sunshine per day. The same number was also recorded in November and will be observed in January.

The percentage of cloud cover varies between 39% in the beginning of the month and 45% at the end. A typical day in December is overcast about 40% of the time and (mostly) clear 46% of the time. The rest of the time it is partly cloudy.

As December falls in the drier half of the year, you shouldn’t expect too much wetness this time of year. In fact, December is the driest month of them all, with a precipitation total of 51mm and only 7 days with rainfall. The possibility of experiencing any type of rainfall ranges from 25% to 28% this month, which is considerably low. The most common type of rainfall is light rain, which is observed on 44% of the days with rainfall. Moderate rain occurs on 28% of those days; thunderstorms and heavy rain respectively on 12% and 10%.

Things to Do

Miami is certainly a different place to celebrate Christmas than what you’re likely used to. Instead of bundling yourself in numerous layers of clothing, shed all those in exchange for a swimsuit at Miami Beach. Many people find that December is the best time to visit Miami because it is mid-winter there. The average maximum temperature can go as high as 22°C, which makes it a popular beach destination this time of year.

Miami has a lot of fun events in December. For art enthusiasts, there is the Art Basel which is touted as one of the world’s premier art exhibits. The event mainly takes place in and around the Convention Center in Miami Beach and features art from no fewer than 195 galleries.

Another attraction in December is the King Mango Strut held every last Sunday of the year. This free parade runs through Coconut Grove and pokes fun by making a parody of past events, so prepare yourself for a lot of laughs and maybe even shock.

Fort Lauderdale is host to the annual Winterfest Boat Parade. There will be more than 100 decorated boats that will parade in the Intracoastal Waterways.

Hit the Beach

With sea temperatures averaging 25°C, you might want to hit the beach during your visit to Florida. One of the top beach areas in Miami is South Beach. If you want to show off some skin after a yearlong workout at the gym then this is the place to go. This beach is also good for surfing. The area is dotted with beautiful Art Deco buildings and is a must-visit when vacationing in Miami. Halouver Park is a recommended place for outdoor activities such as cycling, golfing, fishing and playing tennis.

Eating and Drinking Out

One of the most scenic restaurants in downtown Miami is the Rusty Pelican. Its extraordinary waterfront setting offers a downright magnificent view of the skyline of Miami—it is truly spectacular in the evening. In terms of food, the Rusty Pelican offers both seafood and meat dishes, its cuisine best described as contemporary. Even though this is a hugely popular venue, prices have consciously been kept at an affordable level.

Cecconi’s Miami Beach is set in Soho Beach House and is a modern Italian restaurant that you can visit all day long, from brunch to lunch to dinner, every day of the week. Originally from Venice, Italy, Cecconi’s has a menu filled with pastas and seafood and other typical food from the north of Italy.
