Weather lowdown

March marks the beginning of spring in Gran Canaria’s popular beach resort of Playa del InglesTemperatures start to rise a little and both daytimes and evenings are very pleasant, with an average temperature of 18°C, ranging from 15°C overnight to 21°C during the day.

Rainfall drops to the lightest of the year so far, just 10mm over 5 days. After the winter ‘rainy season’, March is one of the most beautiful times to visit this Spanish holiday destination, as the town is very lush and green, in complete contrast to its barren, semi-desert look after the summer dry spell.

The lowest recorded temperature in March is 10°C and the evenings can become cool, so you’ll need to take your jacket if you’re heading to one of the resort’s lively bars or restaurants for the night. However, daytime temperatures have been known to hit 30°C at this time of year, so you may well enjoy a good sizzle on the beach too.

The number of sunshine hours in March rises to ten hours a day, while the sea temperature stays steady at 19°C.

Visitors to Playa del Ingles during this month should be aware there is a risk of dust storms at this time of year. These storms can sometimes travel across from North Africa, causing dangerous lack of visibility and potential discomfort for anyone with asthma or a respiratory condition.

Where to stay

The four-star Aparthotel Rondo has fully-equipped rooms with a kitchenette, plus an on-site restaurant, pub and a swimming pool, with sun beds and a pool bar. Guests also benefit from the leisure facilities at the neighbouring Miraflor Suites hotel, including a heated pool and children’s playground and activities. The apartments can accommodate up to five guests so it’s a popular choice with families and groups. Located in the centre of Playa del Ingles, between the main streets Avenida de Tirajana and Avenida de Gran Canaria, it is only a few minutes’ walk to the main shopping centres, Yumbo, Kasbah and Cita. You will find a bus stop and several supermarkets and bars close to the hotel and there is a shuttle service to the beach several times a day.

The three-star IFA Hotel Continental is just a short walk from the beach and close to the amenities of the town centre. With a lush tropical garden, a playground and a solarium with sunbeds and parasols, it is the perfect place for families and couples to spend a few days relaxing in this popular beach resort.

Where to eat & drink

For a taste of authentic Spain, enjoy a tapas dinner at Tapas Bar Capaco. Located just a five minute walk from the heart of Playa del Ingles, this intimate eatery serves up all the favourites to share, including cured Spanish ham, marinated olives and dates wrapped in bacon. There’s plenty of traditional sangria to wash it down with for a truly Spanish-themed night.

If you’re craving something a little spicier, book a table at Zayka Authentic Indian Cuisine. Their extensive menu attracts curry lovers from across the island and caters to every taste and spice level. If you don’t see something you like on the menu, the restaurant’s experienced Indian chef will prepare whatever you choose.

Things to do

For a fun family day out, head to Palmitos Park, just a 30 minute drive north from Playa del Ingles town centre. The main attraction here is the dolphin arena, with impressive underwater shows each day, but there’s plenty more to see. Visitors can enjoy a colourful parrot exhibition, an aquarium and a lake that is home to komodo dragons and crocodiles. On top of that, you’ll get to see meerkats and orang-utans, and visit a butterfly house and a prickly cactus garden too. There are also educational interactive encounters with the dolphins available for an extra fee, to learn more about these fascinating creatures and experience direct contact with them. These should be booked first thing in the morning of your visit and are subject to availability.

Lay back and let your stresses melt away with a rejuvenating massage at Massage Gran Canaria Maspalomas. The holistic centre offers a wide range of treatments to benefit your mind, body and soul, including Swedish massage, Thai massage, Shiatsu, hot stone massage, craniosacral therapy and reiki. If you’re feeling particularly indulgent, book yourself in for a four hands massage or a delicious-sounding hot chocolate massage.
