On the south shores of Spain’s Gran Canaria lies the small town of Playa del Inglés. A true party town, the beach resort is known not only for its full-on nightlife, but also as one of the best destinations for gay travellers. The Yumbo Centre especially has a massive gay presence.

Summer arrives early in Playa del Inglés, with high summer temperatures in May reaching well into the 20’s; around 22.4 degrees celsius is average. Lows of 18.3 degrees are usual, so it’s never chilly here, not even overnight.

Rainfall takes yet another significant dive. Precipitation is expected on just a single day of the month, and even then it’s typically just a slight drizzle, totalling around 2mm on average. May is generally the last wet month before the desert-like dry summer.

May is one of the busiest times in Playa del Inglés thanks to the Maspalomas Gay Pride Festival. This annual event sees an additional 60,000 visitors to the area, so those wanting a quieter holiday may wish to travel at a different time. There’s boat parties, street entertainment, drag galas, discos and live music amongst much more. The festival lasts for a week and it’s one of the liveliest times in the town.

Enjoy a traditional Spanish meal at Taberna La Cana. Choose from the a la carte menu, or pick a selection of tapas dishes for a little bit of everything. The restaurant is located in the town centre and is also open for breakfast and lunch. There’s a huge wine list here to perfectly compliment the food.
