April in Playa del Ingles on the island of Gran Canaria sees beautifully warm springtime temperatures at an average of 19°C, fluctuating from a low of 16°C at night to an average daytime high of 21°C. There’s no need to pack a jacket at this time of year, not even for the evenings. This is a great time to visit to avoid the summer crowds.

This Spanish resort has reached a sweltering record daytime high of 33°C in April, though you can expect partly cloudy skies around half of the time. The month warms up as it progresses, the days are getting longer and the number of sunshine hours is on the rise to a bright eleven hours a day. The lowest April temperature on record is 10°C, but conditions this cold are rare.

There’s a significant drop in rainfall at this time of year in Playa del Ingles. In fact, it’s almost half that of the previous month, with only 6mm expected on average. This usually falls over five days, so on average the chance of rain is just 21%, and this stays consistent over the course of the month. When it does rain, it is most likely to be a little drizzle or moderate rain showers that pass quickly. Typical wind speeds are usually no more than a light or strong breeze.

The sea temperature stays the same at an average of 19°C, though it will heat up a degree next month as summer approaches.

April is a great time to explore the beautiful surroundings of Playa del Ingles, and what better way to get out into the fresh air than with a cycling tour? Bike 10Mil offer mountain bike excursions to the nearby Eagle Pass, Chira and Los Sitios. Their knowledgeable guides will lead you through the countryside of Gran Canaria for a highly enjoyable tour. All bicycle and safety equipment is provided, along with a picnic for full day trips. The company also organises local hiking trips and bike racing, as well as bike rental for those preferring to ride at their own pace. For a mind-boggling day out, head to ParaPark, a mysterious and unique team game experience for groups of teenagers and adults. Enter a building in the heart of Playa del Ingles and the door will lock behind you. Once inside, you have to trust your wits and work together to solve puzzles, logogriphs and riddles within sixty minutes, in order for the door to open and let you out again. Every object you see could be a clue and teamwork is essential as you work against the clock.

Where to eat & drink

For an entertaining evening out, head to Ricky’s Cabaret Bar. Featuring some of the best comedy drag acts in Playa del Ingles, a night here is sure to be one to remember. The bar is located in the Yumbo Centre, on the ground floor right next door to the KFC, so it’s particularly handy for a late night snack after a bit too much to drink!

Noodle lovers should make a date for Sunset Bay, a Singaporean restaurant and bar overlooking the beach. With a laid back atmosphere suitable for families, it offers Asian specialities including Singapore-style fried rice, sweet roasted Singapore pork and honey prawns, as well as burgers, baguettes, spaghetti and pizzas. Its location at the end of the beach, above the jet-ski rental area, makes it perfect for a relaxed evening meal as you watch the sunset.

Where to stay

The three-star Parque Cristobal Gran Canaria offers luxury accommodation at an affordable price. Located within walking distance of the beach, this complex features two outdoor pools, which are heated during the cooler months, as well as lush tropical gardens.
