Weather Overview for Playa del Ingles
Canaries are famed for their climate of ‘eternal spring.’ Year round they
enjoy a mild climate with little variation. Throughout summer the temperatures
rarely reach uncomfortable extremes and winters remain warm. The heat is aided
by the southerly location and the nearby West
African coast which radiates its hot dry climate across to the Canaries.
But its coolness is what is most surprising for its location and this can be
put down to the moderating effect of the sea which is amplified by the cool
Canary Current. Generally, the southern parts of the islands experience warmer temperatures
than the northern towns, especially in the winter. Playa
Playa del Ingles is home to one of the most famous beaches in Europe, a beach than can become very packed come summer time so if you want to avoid this it is best to visit in the off peak seasons.
Summer, from May till November, brings average high temperatures of 23°C to 26°C. It is not uncommon in summer for the heat to exceed 30°C but the pleasant trade winds which blow across the coast have a cooling effect which takes the edge off the heat. However, the UV factor is high during the 9 hours of sunshine each day. Rainfall is very low; in fact from June till August you can expect no rain to fall at all. It picks up at the end of the season but only a few heavy showers will occur. The water temperature peaks in September and October at 23°C.
In winter, between December and April, the southern part of the island is much more popular than the north as tourists and locals flock to the south to avoid the windier, wetter conditions of the north. November to February sees Playa del Ingles experiencing its greatest rainfall; the period sees around 20 mm of rain per month: not enough to drown a mouse. Rain usually falls in short but heavy showers, sometimes developing into real storms. The average high temperature falls to 20°C at its lowest and nights are pleasant in the mid teens. Sunshine levels are consistently good, averaging around seven hours per day. However, the odd day of blustery, cool weather is bound to occur. The water remains warm enough for swimming throughout the season, not falling below 19°C.
