July is one of the most popular times to visit Puerto Rico and it’s no wonder why. With clear blue skies and scorching sunshine almost guaranteed every day, July is the peak of the tourist season. Temperatures can reach a sizzling 25°C during the day. Temperatures cool slightly to a pleasant 19°C in the evening.
You can expect plenty of sunshine during your stay; up to 11 hours a day. The sea water temperature is a pleasant 20°C. Expected rainfall is 2mm over 3 days.

Festival Internacional Canarias Jazz and Mas Heineken (International Jazz Festival) is a July highlight. Taking place in mid-July and lasting around three weeks, vistors can enjoy a range of jazz concerts and events.
Things to do
Animal lovers won’t want to miss the chance to go whale and dolphin watching in Puerto Rico. The waters surrounding the Canary Islands are teeming with almost 30 different species of cetaceans, making it one of the top places in Europe to spot the friendly creatures. Boat trips leave several times each day between Monday and Saturday from the port and come in two durations – the two hour trip and the three hour trip which includes a swim in a harbour.
Families with children won’t want to miss out on Aqualand in Maspalomas – one of the most popular attractions in Gran Canaria. This water park is suitable for holiday makers of all ages and features a sea lion show, loads of water slides and a brand new high dive show.
Hit the beach
Playa de Puerto Rico is one of the most beautiful beaches in the whole of Gran Canaria. Here you’ll find a long stretch of soft golden sand, ideal for children to play in, next to clean and clear waters where waves are practically unheard of, creating the ideal conditions for swimming. There are plenty of facilities for visitors to enjoy, such as sun lounger and parasol hire, showers, toilets, lifeguards, wheelchair access and a wealth of water sports, including sailing, snorkelling, jet skiing, fishing, diving and windsurfing. Lining the beach is a number of shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants, so you’ll be spoilt for choice when lunch time rolls around.
Where to eat & drink
With a wide selection of international dishes available, Oscar’s Restaurant is one of the most popular in Puerto Rico. The service here is superb but the restaurant fills up fast, so it’s best to book a table the day before to avoid being disappointed.
El Gaitero is a top location for visitors who want to try traditional Canarian cuisine whilst on holiday. This spacious restaurant provides diners with plenty of room in which to browse the menu which includes specialities such as mixed meat grill, roast shoulder of lamb, salt encrusted sea bass and fisherman’s sword fish. There is a comprehensive wine list available, with at least one bottle to complement every meal.
One of the most popular bars in the south of Gran Canaria, Xtreeemz is a must-visit during your holiday in Puerto Rico. Found in the Europa Commercial Centre, this bar has been established for almost 20 years and plays a variety of ‘60s, 70s and 80s music, which always gets the crowds going. Xtreeemz is known throughout the island for its quiz, in which players win free shots – whether they get the answers right or wrong.
Amadores Beach Club is the ideal place for seafood lovers who want to enjoy an ocean view with their meal. Just a stone’s throw away from the beach, this eatery serves a huge selection of starters, salads, meat, poultry and rice dishes, with their speciality being fish and seafood. There are plenty of freshly-caught items on the menu, including mashed mullet with caviar, hake tacos, Norwegian shellfish and Galician octopus, all of which are sure to put a smile on your face. If you’ve left room for dessert, there is a great number of options to choose from, such as sweet orange soup, lemon mint sorbet, chocolate fondant and sweet popcorn.
If you’re searching for a lively club with a party atmosphere, look no further than Disco Pub Snoopy. Open from 7pm until 3.30am, this pub shows all live sporting events on a huge flat screen TV, before the scene evolves into that of a heady nightclub. The resident DJ plays a top variety of dance music, with plenty of R&B tracks, making it popular with the younger crowd.
