Averages for Florida in May
The warmest half of the year kicks off in May and this is a brilliant time to visit Florida, the most visited beach destination on the east coast of the United States. May is characterised by constantly increasing temperatures. The nighttime low temperature and daytime high temperature rise respectively by 3 and 2 degrees in the course of the month. At night, it is 18°C warm on average, while in the afternoon, the mercury climbs to a hot average high of 32°C. Temperatures in the mid-30s and higher are absolutely no exception on May afternoons. The overall average temperature in May is 25°C, significantly warmer than it was in April. June, on the other hand, the official start of summer, will be warmer still.
The sea temperature is also pleasantly warm this time of year—all year round for that matter—and averages a delightful 27°C. Among many other things, swimming is a popular thing to do in Florida in May.
With temperatures this high, it is advisable to bring sunscreen, large hats and sunglasses to protect you from the harsh rays of the sun. And there is plenty of sunshine this month. Every day has 9 hours of sunshine on average.
This high amount of sunshine is due to two things. First, the relatively low percentage of cloud cover, which ranges between 26% in the beginning of the month and 36% at the end. Second, the ever-increasing length of the day. The days in May are among the longest of the year. May 1 is the month’s shortest day with 13.15 hours of daylight, while May 31 is the longest day with 13.46 daylight hours.
While May may be one of the sunniest and warmest months of the year, it is also one of the wettest. This is the first month of the wetter half of the year in Florida. In Miami, for example, the total amount of rainfall is 173mm this month—compared with only 81mm in April—and there are 12 days with rainfall. The beginning of the month is still quite dry, but the chance that rainfall occurs increases rapidly throughout the month—it rises from 22% to 39%. In this warm and wet time of year, the most common type of rainfall is thunderstorms. They occur on no less than 62% of the days with rainfall. Light rain and moderate rain might be experienced as well, but are far less likely, respectively occurring on 22% and 10% of the rainy days. Luckily, though, those rain showers and thunderstorms tend to be very brief. Sunshine always follows rainfall in Florida!
