Spring comes in full glory in April and marks the beginning of the tourist season in Crete. Thousands flock to the island for its amazing weather and the countless sights it has to offer. During April, average daytime temperature rises up to a comfortable 17 degrees Celsius, giving life to the islands myriads outdoor activities.
Daytime high peaks are the island’s signature 20 degrees Celsius, while the temperature rarely drops below 12 degrees, even during the infrequent rainy days. Sea temperatures stay on par with average daytime temperature, ensuring that the sea is never too cold for swimming, with an average of 17 degrees.

April sees minimal rainfall, and the clouds that may loom above the island during this month are often thin enough to let the sun’s rays pass through and are rarely substantial enough to produce rain. The island’s Easter celebration usually takes place during the month of April and is considered one of the largest religious celebrations on Crete. Each day of the Holy Week leading to Christ’s resurrection is greatly celebrated with unique religious ceremonies and local events. Each Good Tuesday churches shut their lights and take the faithful by surprise. In Good Friday the procession of the holy Epitaph takes place across every settlement, where people walk holding candles. In Saturday night, all churches feature a re-enactment of the resurrection of Christ.
Easter Sunday is a very popular national holiday. Tourists will witness beautiful displays of the country’s culture; grand feasts take place and locals commonly roast lamb, which is often served freely to anyone who wants some.
Things to do
Star Beach is one of Crete’s most popular water parks. The park’s attractions are sure to delight both young and old. In addition to the park’s signature water slides and dozens of pools, Star Beach also features numerous restaurants, a fully equipped spa, water sports activities, and frequently plays host to full-on fun foam parties.

The Creta family fun centre sports the largest go-kart track on the whole island. The track spans ¼ of a mile, with hairpin turns and lots of twists to thrill drivers of all skill levels. The track gives emphasis on safety and family friendliness, with strict guidelines and rigorous rules. No bumping or intentional spinning other cars out is allowed, just fun, safe go-kart racing.
Hit the beach
Gouves beach is a popular tourist area close to the island’s capital of Heraklion. Gouves is a fun and family-friendly beach with lots of cafes, restaurants, bars and shopping centres. The nightlife is also bustling in Gouves, and partygoers dance on the beach into the small hours of the morning.
The beach at Kissamos is reported to be one of the cleanest beaches in the Mediterranean. This blue flag beach boasts very fine white sand and deep blue waters. The beach offers very little in terms of tourist facilities though, so it is not ideal for families with young children or elderly tourists. However, numerous water sports enthusiasts make their way here for surfing and snorkelling.

Where to eat & drink
Vegera is a traditional Mediterranean restaurant serving local Cretan as well as Italian and Hispanic delicacies. As the owner puts it “The dining table at Vegera is a kaleidoscope of colours and tastes, which are the very essence of health and freshness.” Considering Vegera has garnered tremendous praise over the last few years as being one of the best restaurants in Crete, he must have a point.
The Ferryman Taverna serves traditional Cretan as well as Greek dishes that delight diners with their diversity and depth of flavour. This is the very same restaurant where they filmed the popular TV series Who pays the Ferryman in Lassithi. It has remained true to tradition, with good food and a highly hospitable atmosphere.
The White Lion is a cosy pub in Hersonissos. Ideally located on the main shopping street, the White Lion is a popular meeting place for tourists and locals alike.
Boasting a beautiful seaside location, the El Paradiso club parties hard all night long, all year round. The club is open almost continuously and plays the latest and trendiest beats and international pop hits, and attracts a mix of lively partygoers.
